About this course

Latin music in its own right is one of the most popular styles of music worldwide. Its syncopated rhythms and driving grooves have influenced many other popular styles of music, widely ranging from rock and blues, to pop, jazz and even hip hop.

Doug Munro’s Latin Guitar Playbook presents the authentic techniques, harmonic approaches, voicings and specific rhythmic feels of 8 key latin styles to expand your musical vocabulary and repertoire, while also complementing the other styles you play on the gig or in a jam.

Master musician and guitar virtuoso, Doug Munro is an established veteran of the New York music scene. Since 1987, he has released 17 albums as a leader and has appeared on over 75 recordings as a sideman, producer, and arranger working with a diverse array of artists including Dr. John, Michael Brecker, and Dr. Lonnie Smith.

Doug has over 75 original published compositions and over 300 recorded arrangements performed by some of the finest players in the world. He has released recordings in many jazz styles including: Soul-Jazz, Organ Trio, Latin and Gypsy Jazz. We’re thrilled to welcome Doug to the family with his first TrueFire course, Latin Guitar Playbook!

”Over the course of this playbook, we’ll dive deep into eight must-know latin style studies. For each I’ll tell you a bit about the background of the style and some key players, I’ll take you through the key techniques, chords, and rhythms you’ll need to know, and finally we’ll play through a pair of performance studies with a backing track for each.

Each of the sixteen performance studies is inspired by a song from the popular latin music songbook, and across the eight style studies, we’ll play bossa nova, samba, bolero, cha-cha, rumba, merengue, bachata, and of course, the mambo.

I’ll break it all down in detail and you’ll have all of TrueFire’s learning tools to work with as we explore the vibrant sounds and traditions of latin music on guitar!”

Doug will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are also included to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar, and let’s dig in with Doug Munro!

I’ll break down everything in detail and of course you’ll have TrueFire’s learning tools to work with.

Each of the sixteen performance studies is inspired by a song from the popular latin music songbook, and across the eight style studies, we’ll play bossa nova, samba, bolero, cha-cha, rumba, merengue, bachata, and of course the mambo.

Grab your guitar, and come join me as we explore the great sounds and traditions of latin music.

Approachable introduction to Latin music

Latin music can be overwhelming with its rhythms and its chord selection. Doug does a great job making the material accessible while teaching a lot of material.
