Blues Guitar Fakebook: Rhythm Vol. 2

About this course

Hands down, the best way to get your blues chops up to snuff is to first learn all of the most popular blues standards and then play them as often as possible on the gig, at the jam, or with your buds. In Jeff McErlain’s Blues Guitar Fakebook: Rhythm Vol. 2, you’ll play through 30 more rhythm guitar studies to learn the chords, rhythm patterns, fills, and comping approaches for the blues progressions and rhythm parts found in 30 more of the most popular blues standards.

”I'll perform all of the rhythm parts over backing tracks, and show you a couple of variations for each of the rhythm guitar studies. I'll vary the chord voicings and comping approaches, just like I would on a live gig. After each performance, I'll break it down part-by-part emphasizing the techniques and creative approaches that you should focus on.”

Each rhythm guitar study is also charted with chord grids illustrating the exact chords that Jeff plays throughout the study. Reference the charts and play along with Jeff to expand your chord vocabulary and develop your comping skills. You can also use the playalongs to practice improvising solos over these popular blues progressions.
"As always, Jeff is a likeable and listenable instructor, with some cool riffs and licks in his locker to share (but does he have to make it look so effortless!) ... : ) I have several of his courses and this looks like another. Bravo Jeff and TrueFire." - Rob B., TrueFire Student
Jeff handpicked these 30 progressions based on 30 more of the most commonly encountered blues standards that you’ll find being called out on the gig or at the jam:

These 30 progressions are similar to the blues progressions and rhythm approaches used in the following tunes: I'm Tore Down, If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day, Rolling and Tumbling, Easy Baby, Honey Hush, Smoke Stack Lightning, One Way Out, Black Magic Woman, The House is Rocking, Trouble No More, Little Girl, Statesboro Blues, Outside Woman Blues, Boogie Chillin, Shake Your Hips, Knock Knock, Worried Life Blues, Talk to Your Daughter, Strange Brew, Tramp, Someday After a While You'll Be Sorry, Damn Right I Got the Blues, Bad Luck and Trouble, Checking on My Baby, Help Me, I'll Change My Style, Baby What You Want Me to Do, Hellhound on My Trail, Going Down, It Hurts Me Too, Rolling Stone Blues, Catfish Blues, and Rollin' Stone Blues.
"Jeff is an incredible instructor. Not only is he clear and concise in his teaching, but he also seems to have a great personality. There is humility in his approach, and you genuinely feel encouraged to progress as you take on one lesson at a time. He is passionate and extremely knowledgeable about tone, effects, and the blues. I'm extremely grateful for all I have learned from him." - Joel Fredikson, TrueFire Student
All of the rhythm guitar performances are tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes. The charts include chord grids of the voicings that Jeff uses throughout the playalong. You’ll be able to loop and slow down the video, tab, and notation so that you can work with the material at your own pace. Plus, Jeff includes all of the rhythm tracks for you to work with on your own.

While the Rhythm Edition of the Blues Guitar Fake Book is designed primarily to help players improve their rhythm guitar and accompaniment skills, you’ll find each playalong — with Jeff’s comping parts — to also be the perfect jam track to also work on your solos and improvisation.

Grab your guitar and let’s add 30 more killer blues progression to our repertoire with Jeff McErlain.
"I've purchased most of Jeff's lessons. I have many TrueFire courses, but I find his to be the very best and am happy to purchase anything he puts out. His courses are useful, interesting, and informative and when some individual lessons overlap from one course to another, he always adds something new to it so that your understanding/vocabulary of the song evolves. His courses offer endless entertainment, combinations, and insight. I am a better player because of Jeff. Thanks a ton, man." - Jeremy Finkelstein, TrueFire Student

Blues Guitar Fakebook: Rhythm Vol. 2
Hi, I'm Jeff McErlain and welcome to Blues Guitar Fakebook: Rhythm Vol. 2. In this second edition, I've put together 30 of my favorite classic blues and blues rock into a collection of must know tunes. Please check out Vol. 1 by my friend Corey Congilio. Put these two courses together, and you'll have a very solid blues repertoire.

I'll perform the rhythm parts over backing tracks, and show you a couple of variations for each of the tunes. I'll vary the chord voicings and comping approaches, just like I would on a live gig. After each performance, I'll break it down part-by-part emphasizing the techniques you should focus on. We'll play through changes based on tunes like "Smokestack Lightning", "One Way Out", "I'm Tore Down", "Catfish Blues", "It Hurts Me Too", and many more.

Everything is tabbed and notated and you'll get the backing tracks to work with on your own. You can also loop or slow down any of the performances to work with the materials at your own pace. Grab your guitar, and let's dig in!
Torn Up
Here is the Freddie King classic "I'm Tore Down" released in 1961. Freddie is often referred to as the Texas Cannonball and has written some of the most popular blues tunes of all time. He was a triple threat in the sense that he was equally a great singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was also one of the "Three Kings" along with Albert Kong and B.B. King. He died tragically young at the age of 42 in 1976.
Torn Up
"I'm Tore Down" was released in 1961 and quickly became a blues standard covered by many artists including Eric Clapton. The song was actually written by King's pianist Sonny Thompson.

"I'm Tore Down" uses a classic "downtown" riff as I discuss in the video. This is great terminology to know for any blues musician as these slangs are ubiquitous. They also save a lot of time on the bandstand!
Judgement Day
Here's the classic riff Eric Clapton uses on his version of Robert Johnson's "If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day". This groove has been used on many tunes such as "Rolling and Tumbling", "Stones in My Passway", and many more. I highly suggest listening to Robert Johnson, I find a lot of people know his name but not his music. I also suggest Eric Clapton's Me And Mr. Johnson record for a modern take on the Johnson catalog.
Judgement Day
On this one, most notably I've gone to an open tuning, which is quite common in the blues, especially when playing slide guitar. For this tune, I left out the slide but you can see how it would work nicely. If you want to dig into slide, I'd suggest a lighter weight glass slide, not the super thin test-tube thickness slide - those break earlier and sound like poop. The reason for the lighter slide is that if you tackle it on your electric, it's not set-up optionally for slide. For that you'd want heavier strings and higher action.
Take It Easy Baby
"Take It Easy Baby" is a basically Magic Sam's classic "Easy Baby". Magic Sam was a great singer/guitarist and blues legend. His version of "Sweet Home Chicago", along with Robert Johnson's original (there's that name again!), are considered seminal. The Magic Sam version is the one we hear the most.

Although I don't show it in this course, do me a favor and check out Magic Sam playing his tune "Looking Good" on YouTube. He's playing Earl Hooker's guitar (It has his name on it), so it's often wrongly labeled as Earl Hooker. This performance may be one of the greatest live performance ever captured on film!
Take It Easy Baby
This tune is interesting, as it's a standard 12-bar blues, but the I chord is minor and the IV and V are major. I love variations on the blues like this, as it can make an evening of blues much more interesting than the standard fare. On that note, as you listen through this course, take note at the variation in feels, changes, and rhythm on each of these songs. The blues was always varied...interesting blues, that is.

Great Sequel

As always, another great course from Jeff. He is one of the best teachers on Truefire and this sequel to volume 1 is well worth buying if you are into rhythm guitar work. And, of course, he is a class guitarist himself too.
