About this course

Hands down, the best way to get your blues chops up to snuff is to first learn all of the most popular blues standards and then play them as often as possible on the gig, at the jam, or with your buds.

In Corey Congilio's Blues Guitar Fakebook: Rhythm, you’ll play through 30 rhythm guitar studies and learn the chords, rhythm patterns, fills, and comping approaches for the blues progressions and rhythm parts found in the most popular blues standards.

”I'll perform all of the rhythm parts over backing tracks, and show you a couple of variations for each of the rhythm guitar studies. I'll vary the chord voicings and comping approaches, just like I would on a live gig. After each performance, I'll break it down part-by-part emphasizing the techniques and creative approaches that you should focus on.”

Each rhythm guitar study is also charted with chord grids illustrating the exact chords that Corey plays throughout the study. Reference the charts and play along with Corey to expand your chord vocabulary and develop your comping skills. You can also use the playalongs to practice improvising solos over these popular blues progressions.
"This course gives me exactly what I hoped it would: great sounding background tracks and short tutorials that give me plenty of opportunities to practice my rhythm chops. What I really, really appreciate about this course so far is that Corey offers different approaches to each track which shows me how I can use different chords and small parts of 'em in different fretboard positions while playing along tunes I love." - Oliver Meyer, TrueFire Student
Corey handpicked 30 progressions based on 30 of the most commonly encountered blues standards that you’ll find being called out on the gig or at the jam:

I'm Ready, Five Long Years, Born Under a Bad Sign, Messin' with the Kid, Sweet Home Chicago, King Bee, Crosscut Saw, Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out, Hoochie Coochie Man, Further On Up The Road, The Thrill Is Gone, Goin’ Down, I Got My Mojo Workin’, Key To The Highway, Tore Down, Sittin' on Top of the World, The Things I Used To Do, Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, She Caught The Katy, All Your Love, My Babe, Stormy Monday, Rock Me, Shake Your Money Maker, Killing Floor, Little Red Rooster, Everyday I Have The Blues, Evil, Hound Dog, Big Boss Man.

All of the rhythm guitar performances are tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes. The charts include chord grids of the voicings Corey uses throughout the playalong. You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop and/or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the material. Plus, Corey generously includes all of the rhythm tracks for you to work with on your own.
"Corey consistently places tons of forethought and his vast experience into every lick, every blues rhythm and every solo lesson ... and always progresses us along into cool new challenging & advancing directions with his expert descriptions and advice on where and how to use all his musical ideas!" - Jim C., TrueFire Student
While the Rhythm Edition of the Blues Guitar Fake Book is designed primarily to help players improve their rhythm guitar and accompaniment skills, you’ll find each playalong — with Corey’s comping parts — to also be the perfect track to work on your solos and improvisation.

Grab your guitar and let’s beef up our blues comping chops with Corey Congilio!

Blues Guitar Fakebook: Rhythm Vol. 1
Hi, I'm Corey Congilio, and welcome to Blues Guitar Fakebook: Rhythm Vol. 1. In this edition, I'll show you how to play the rhythm guitar parts for 30 of the most commonly encountered blues progressions and tunes being called out on the gig or at the jam.

I'll perform the rhythm parts over backing tracks, and show you a couple of variations for each of the tunes. I'll vary the chord voicings and comping approaches, just like I would on a live gig. After each performance, I'll break it down part-by-part emphasizing the techniques you should focus on.

We'll play through changes based on tunes like "The Thrill is Gone", "Sweet Home Chicago", "Stormy Monday", "Shake Your Money Maker", and many more. Everything is tabbed and notated, and you'll get the backing tracks to work with on your own. Alright, grab your guitar and let's dig in!
As Anybody Can Be
"As Anybody Can Be" is based off the song "I'm Ready" by Muddy Waters. This shuffle is not your typical 12-bar blues, and it's been a classic way before it was featured in the Viagra commercial!

This song, like many we'll cover, has a "verse" and a "chorus". The first part is the chorus, with the single line riff happening over the verse. The riff lasts for 8 bars, and is the part that is not so typical. I put some fun sliding rhythm moves in here too, so enjoy!
As Anybody Can Be
We're in the key of E for "As Anybody Can Be". Feel free to work on the "verse" and "choruses" separately on your own before putting them both together.
A Tough Half Decade
"A Tough Half Decade" is in the key of D and is similar to the tune "Five Long Years". You can hear great versions of this song by its originator Freddie King and his protégé...yes, protégé...Eric Clapton! I put classic slow blues rhythm examples in this one, so dig in!
A Tough Half Decade
With a slow blues like this one, I encourage you to try the sliding 6th move wherever and whenever you want. This example, like all 30 in this course, is just a framework to work with. Use your imagination and try different ideas!
Bad Luck
This example, "Bad Luck", is taken from the tune "Born Under a Bad Sign". Albert King made this song famous, but great versions exist by everyone from Cream to Robben Ford. Check them all out! This song can be tricky at first. Don't lose your place and take note of the fun second half.

Speaking of the second half...I played it differently than I teach it in the breakdown. My apologies. I had a discrepancy in the transcription and played it differently by mistake. Both ways are cool, but the way I play it in the performance is the way I have it transcribed. Thanks, and enjoy!
Bad Luck
One tip with this one is to really keep track of where you're at in the form. The song can seem a little monotonous at first if you're used to just playing standard 12-bar forms. Pay attention and keep your place in the tune and it will become effortless.

Solid Course with Lots of Rhythm Examples

Corey is a well known master at rhythm guitar and it really shows in this course. There are plenty of examples from a variety of songs, each with plenty of variation than your standard course. The course is not structured but rather a conglomeration of a variety of songs, and they are not ranked from easiest to hardest. Take that however you like --- some may like it, some may not. The one thing to note is that Corey does not go through a detailed explanation of how he came up with the rhythm parts, which is something he normally does for his online courses. The lessons are still very useful and will really help one master their rhythm technique.

Great Jam Course

Great course for late beginner/intermediate, and a heck of a lot of fun! Each of the progressions Cory presents is now in rotation as part of my daily practice warm-up. Additionally, if you go out on to Youtube and find the tunes the progressions are based on, chances are with a key change here and there you can pretty much play most -- if not all -- of the that song.
