Blues Rhythm Guitar for Beginners 2

About this course

In Module 1 of Jeff McErlain’s Blues Rhythm Guitar for Beginners, you learned the fundamental building blocks for playing blues rhythm guitar.

Here in Module 2, Jeff takes your blues rhythm skills to the next level with more strumming patterns, moveable barre chords, and additional essential techniques such as double-stops, muting, and rhythm dynamics.

You will play your way through the entire course, which is what makes Jeff’s contextual, hands-on approach so effective — you don’t have to read music, learn tedious theory, or struggle through boring exercises.

”In the first module, you learned a few strumming patterns, your first turnaround, the boogie woogie riff, and started developing your blues technique with muting, picking approaches, hammer-ons and pull-offs.

In this second module, we're going to take your blues rhythm chops to the next level by learning how to play what you already know in the key of E, which is one of the most popular keys for the blues.

You’ll learn more rhythm patterns and I’ll show you the most important moveable barre chords — you’ll be able to play the blues in any key! I'll also show you one of the most useful movable chords for playing the blues — the dominant 9th chord.

You’ll learn how to play a minor blues and a slow blues with a 12/8 feel. Along the way, we’ll work on more techniques such as rhythm dynamics, double-stops, and sliding chords.

Just like we did in Module 1, each lesson series begins with an overview and demonstration. We’ll practice everything together using slow practice playalongs and then you’ll put your new skills to work by playing over full-band backing tracks for a real world musical context.

Using TrueFire’s learning tools, you can slow down and loop any of the video lessons to learn at your own pace.”

Each lesson set includes an overview, demonstration, slow practice playalong, and a performance study using a blues backing track for real-world musical context.

You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the lessons. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let’s take our rhythm chops to the next level with Jeff McErlain!

Blues Rhythm Guitar for Beginners: 2
Hey I’m Jeff McErlain. Welcome to module 2 of Blues Rhythm Guitar for Beginners.

In Module 1, you learned the fundamental building blocks for playing blues guitar. You can now play a blues progression in the key of A with seventh chords, have a few strumming patterns under your belt, have a grip on the boogie woogie riff, learned how to play a turnaround and you started developing your technique with muting, picking approaches, hammer-ons and pull-offs.

Here in Module 2, we’ll take it to the next level by learning how to play what we already know in the key of E — another very popular key for blues.

You’ll learn more strumming patterns and how to play ‘barre’ chords so you can play the blues in any key. I’ll also show you the dominant 9th chord — one of the most useful moveable chords in blues.

You’ll learn how to play a minor blues AND a slow blues with a 12/8 feel. Along the way we’ll work on rhythm dynamics, muting techniques, double-stops and sliding chords.

Just like we did in Module 1 — we’ll practice everything together! Each lesson begins with an overview and demonstration.

We’ll then practice together using a slow play along, and then we’ll play over a blues backing track for real-world musical context.

Plus, using TrueFire’s learning tools, you can loop, slow down or sync the tab to any of the video lessons to learn at your own pace.

Ready to take it to the next level? Grab your guitar, let's get started.
Blues Vol 1 Review
In this course we're going to be building on much of what we went over in Blues Rhythm Guitar for Beginners: 2. So if you haven't checked that course out yet I highly recommend that you do so before jumping into these lessons!
E Blues with Seventh Chords
In this next series of lessons we're going to run through a simple E Blues. I'll start things off with a breakdown of a few basic demonstrations. Next, I'll cover a slow version of the tune to get you ready for a full playalong with the band i the final lesson of this series. Be sure to use tabsync as a guide to ensure you're hitting the right notes, this will also improve your timing, and if you need to slow things down a bit more utilize the tempo adjustment feature below the lesson video.

Adding More Rhythm Dynamics
Dynamics in music are the art of using the volume to add authenticity to your playing and is a technique mastered by greats like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. In this video we're going to go over how we can use dynamics to add depth and layers to our rhythm guitar.
Boogie Woogie Blues Pattern in E
In the first volume we learned about a number of Boogie Woogie pattern variations in the key of A, in this lesson we're going to take some of those same variations and apply them to a Boogie Woogie pattern in the key of E. First I'll run through a demonstration and break it down, then we'll play the tune slowly, and finally we'll bring it all together and play with the band.

An excellent series, and excellent volume 2

I've finished both Vol. 1 and 2 and this is an excellent series. He is a great teacher and communicator. He clearly breaks down everything he does and is easy going but still precise and clear. Great if you are a beginner but also if you have some experience but want to brush up on the fundamentals that perhaps you have been getting sloppy with.
