They say you can’t have too many friends. If you’re a blues player, that goes for turnarounds too. In fact, a big repertoire of turnarounds may contain some of your best friends. Listen to your favorite blues guitarists and take notice of how many different turnarounds they have at their command, and how they’ll use turnarounds as intros and outros as well.

Robbie Calvo’s 25 Blues Turnarounds You Must Know will stock up, and spice up, your repertoire of turnarounds with an extensive range of 25 versatile turnarounds covering blues scale turnarounds, dominant arpeggio turnarounds, double stop turnarounds, chordal turnarounds, and spicy chromatic turnarounds.

”The two-bar turnaround section at the end of a typical blues progression is an essential part of any guitarist's repertoire, which is why I've filmed my favorite selections of turnarounds all in the key of E so that you can mix and match them for your jams, gigs, and sessions. Most of these turnarounds can be moved to work in other keys simply by shifting the patterns and phrases up or down the fretboard.”

For each of the 25 blues turnarounds featured in this course, Robbie will first perform the turnaround over a jam track, and then break it down for you note-by-note emphasizing the essential techniques and harmonic concepts in play.

”I've demonstrated each phrase in context, at fast and slow tempos, and broken each idea down slowly and in full detail for "real time learning." This core course is perfect for any aspiring blues guitarist and the perfect chop and repertoire builder for the seasoned pro.”

All of the turnarounds are tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes. You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop and slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, Robbie generously includes all of the backing tracks for you to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar and let’s dig in on blues turnarounds with Robbie Calvo!

25 Blues Turnarounds
The two-bar turnaround section at the end of a typical blues progression is an essential part of any guitarist's repertoire, which is why I've filmed my favorite selections of turnarounds all in the key of E so that you can mix and match them for your own jams, gigs, and sessions. Most of these turnarounds can be moved to work in other keys simply by shifting the patterns and phrases up or down the fretboard.

This course contains a selection of blues scale turnarounds, dominant arpeggio turnarounds, double stop turnarounds, chordal turnarounds, and spicy chromatic turnarounds. I've demonstrated each phrase in context, at fast and slow tempos, and broken each idea down slowly and in full detail for "real time learning". This core course is perfect for any aspiring blues guitarist and the perfect chop and repertoire builder for the seasoned pro.
Blues Scale Open Position
Our first blues turnaround is an open position E blues scale idea that you've probably heard many times. It's a classic turnaround that's perfect for when you're singing and playing the chords to a blues in open position. You can also play this idea at the 12th fret, fretting the notes at the 12th fret that are open strings in this idea. Check it out!
Blues Scale - 3rd Fret
Blues Turnaround 2 is derived from the E blues scale found at the 3rd fret position, which some of you may see as the first shape of the major pentatonic scale. I'd suggest working on this turnaround with the slow jam loop at first, making sure the chromatic triplet figures are nice and smooth. Think of them as legato lines - watch my right hand picking, you'll notice that I don't pick every note.
Blues Scale - 5th Fret
Blues Turnaround 3 is created from the E blues scale at the 5th fret position. I like this turnaround a lot, as I can utilize the chromatic aspect of the lick on the top E string. Notice that I'm implying the G# of an E7 chord by applying a blues bend to the G note in the blues scale - try and make this smooth and sassy.
Blues Scale - 7th Fret
Blues Turnaround 4 is played at the 7th fret using the E blues scale. You'll notice that I'm working my way through each pattern of the blues scale, so you may even want to think in terms like this when playing too: moving through the patterns. Note that I'm blues bending the A note up to Bb (the b5) and I don't actually reach the pitch of Bb, so think of this as implying the note, not actually achieving it. This is a nice lick that descends through the blues scale from high to low. Play slowly at first and build up to speed.
Blues Scale - 10th Fret
Blues Turnaround 5 is played at the 10th fret position using the E blues scale. I start this turnaround by raking the 3rd and second strings to achieve a nice aggressive double stop 3rd sound from the scale. Really dig in to the notes and then let the lick flow nicely between the fourth and first finger. Some of you may play this using the 3rd finger...whatever works best for you!
Blues Scale - 12th Fret
Blues Turnaround 6 is derived from our favorite blues scale box at the 12th fret. I'm implying an Eb note on the starting note D to add a slinky soulful sound to the start of this turnaround. Areas to watch are executing the octave string skip from the low B note to the octave B note at the end of the phrase. Practice this slowly until it sounds really smooth.

What a GREAT turnarounds course!

This is a assortment of turnarounds that all have a place in your goody-bag. To play the blues you have to use the turnaround to keep everyone's attention and circle back to the start. You can't do that with only one! Learn them all and use them for added spice.
