The 8 Essential Latin Guitar Styles

About this course

TrueFire Foundry courses are independently produced courses presented by a hand-picked selection of top-notch artists and educators from around the world. Filmed in the educator’s own studio, Foundry courses bring fresh educational concepts and very effective teaching methodologies to TrueFire Students. Doug Munro’s Foundry course, 8 Essential Latin Guitar Styles will teach you how play Bossa Nova, Salsa, Samba, Calypso, Merengue and three other latin styles on guitar.

Hello I'm Doug Munro — welcome to my TrueFire Foundry course, 8 Essential Latin Guitar Styles, which I produced in my own studio.

This course is designed to teach you 8 of the most common Latin rhythm styles for the guitar. Many guitarists have one or two types of Latin style patterns that they can call upon if they need to create a Latin feel. This can be frustrating for the other players, especially if they are well-versed in different Latin styles. It can equally be embarrassing for you as a player and may limit the gigs that you are able to do.

In this course, I get rid of the one size fits all mentality that many guitarists bring to playing Latin styles. Each lesson covers a specific common Latin style that will have immediate application to your everyday playing. There are videos, play-along MP3s, and transcriptions in both standard notation and tab.

I also go over commonly used terms such a Samba, Bossa Nova, Afro-Cuban, Clave, Partido Alto and Montuno so that you can understand what to play if someone references these on a gig or recording date.

There is also a recommended listening list, which is the vital key to understanding these styles. The guitar is the central harmonic instrument in most Latin styles and I find it a great joy to lay down authentic rhythms that allow the other members of the group to interact with you and each other in a meaningful, musical way.

I cant wait to show you these styles and watch you develop as a player! Ready to get started? Grab your guitar and let’s dig in to 8 Essential Latin Guitar Styles!

NOTE! Doug Munro organized the course into 8 weekly sections for those students that prefer to have a specified regimen of material across a specified time schedule. However, for those students who prefer to work at their own pace, or even skip around you are certainly encouraged to approach the course in that way as well.

8 Essential Latin Guitar Styles
Thank you for your interest in Latin styles for the guitar! In this course we will take a look at the 8 essential Latin styles and how to incorporate them into your playing.
Week 1: Bossa Nova
Bossa nova is one of the most important Latin guitar styles.
Week 1: Right Hand
Close up look at the right hand technique.
Week 2: Partido Alto
The samba is another Brazilian music style that is similar to the bossa nova but played at a faster tempo. In this lesson, we'll concentrate on the partido alto, which is a sub style in samba. It's easy to learn and it has it's own clave as well. Along with the video, I have attached an MP3 to practice with as well as PDF's for the chord changes and each rhythm with TAB.

Make sure that you go and listen to some samba recordings. You can start with Trio da Paz, João Bosco, Luiz Bonfá, and go from there.

Week 3: Salsa
The salsa is a type of Afro-Cuban dance music. We're going to be learning a simple montuno pattern to play over a 2-3 clave. Montunos are rhythmic and harmonic patterns first played by a guitar like instrument called a tres and later by the piano. Along with the video, I have also attached an MP3 to practice with as well as PDF's for the chord changes and the montuno with TAB.

Make sure that you go and listen to some salsa recordings. You can start with Tito Puente and go from there. Enjoy!

A great Latin guitar course

The first course I bought to Doug Munro is his "Latin guitar playbook" course. It is a great course. So I looked for his others courses because I have enjoyed the way he teaches. I saw that he made the course "The 8 Essential Latin Guitar Styles". I have found that this course is also a great course and a good complement to his "Latin guitar playbook" course. If you like this style of music you will appreciate his courses. Great teaching!

Definitely ESSENTIAL!

You absolutely do not have to be specifically wishing to play Latin Guitar Styles to get a whole load out of this course! It's a Foundry course, so you get the very excellent Doug Munro teaching you from his home studio in a very engaging and informal way. But that does not mean it's time to slouch! Oh no, he's designed this course to run over 8 weeks, each week covering a different style. You will expand your chord and fretboard knowledge, your musical knowledge, your picking patterns, your rhythm work and add many extra dimensions to your playing by working with this course. I highly recommend digging in! Check out Doug's other course on comping too, it makes an excellent companion to really broaden your chord and fretboard knowledge.

The 8 Essential Latin Guitar Styles,

I was surprised to find this theme in true fire, it means that the mind is very broad. It's a complicated job but by hanging on we take pleasure.
