30 Jazz Guitar Rhythms You MUST Know

About this course

Jazz guitarists love to solo and improvise but 90% of their time on the bandstand is dedicated to playing rhythm and accompanying other soloists or vocalists. A great rhythm player is always in high demand at the jazz jam or in any working situation. Students of jazz guitar must develop a versatile vocabulary of voicings and rhythm patterns across a wide range of jazz styles.

Frank Vignola’s 30 Jazz Rhythms You MUST Know will not only majorly expand your jazz rhythm vocabulary and technique, you’ll also learn how to craft your own rhythm parts and comping patterns for virtually any style of jazz that you will encounter from Latin jazz to bebop, blues, and swing.

”Jazz guitarists must have command of a wide variety of rhythm styles and approaches for bebop, swing, gypsy, blues, Latin, and other jazz sub-genres. In this collection of 30 jazz rhythms, I’ve handpicked 30 versatile rhythm licks, patterns, and embellishments across a variety of styles to help you expand your jazz rhythm guitar and comping skills.”

Frank will show you voice leading rhythm parts for the blues, western swing-style approaches, a Miles Davis-inspired quartal harmony rhythm part, gypsy jazz rhythms, Dave Brubeck-style 5/4 grooves, how to incorporate walking bass notes, Bossa Nova rhythm parts, fast Tico Tico style rhythms and dozens of other essential jazz rhythm guitar and comping techniques and approaches.

For each of the 30 jazz rhythms featured in this course, Frank will first perform the rhythm part over a jam track, and then break it down for you section-by-section emphasizing the essential techniques and harmonic concepts in play.

All of the licks are tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes. You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop and/or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, Frank generously includes all of the backing tracks for you to work with on your own.

30 Jazz Rhythms
Hi, I'm Frank Vignola, and welcome to 30 Jazz Rhythms You MUST Know!

We all love to solo, but we spend 90% of our time on the bandstand playing rhythm and accompanying other soloists or vocalists. Jazz guitarists must have command of a wide variety of rhythm styles and approaches for bebop, swing, gypsy, blues, Latin, and other jazz sub-genres.

In this collection of jazz rhythms, I've handpicked 30 versatile rhythm licks, patterns, and embellishments across a variety of styles to help you expand your jazz rhythm guitar skills.

For example, we'll work on a Western swing style rhythm part, voice leading in a blues, a Miles Davis inspired quartal harmony approach, gypsy jazz rhythms, Dave Brubeck style 5/4 grooves, and also incorporate walking bass notes with our chords, look at a jazz bossa nova rhythm, and pick up the tempo with a fast "Tico Tico" style rhythm part.

I'll perform each of the rhythms over a backing track and then I'll break them down emphasizing the harmonic approaches and techniques in play. Everything is tabbed and notated, plus you'll get all of the jam tracks to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar, tune up, and let's dig in!
Western Swingin'
I call our first jazz rhythm "Western Swingin'", because this rhythm is reminiscent of the traditional Western swing style of playing rhythm guitar. We use a C9 and F9, using some chromatic movement on each of the chords while using the pinky for melodic movement.
Cab's Rhythm
"Cab's Rhythm" is dedicated to the great Cab Calloway. This jazz rhythm has become a staple for jazz players and even rock players. The rhythm is infectious and a must know, utilizing a C13 chord to an F9 chord.
Bucky's Lick
"Bucky's Lick" is dedicated to the iconic rhythm guitarist, Bucky Pizzarelli. This is a classic Bucky lick that uses chord fragments, which means we're playing only a part of the chord. You don't always have to play the big full chords, but can use just a small part of the chord and even single notes to get the most out of classic jazz guitar rhythm like this one.
Two Note Freddie
Our fourth jazz rhythm is titled "Two Note Freddie", for the late (and probably the most influential) rhythm guitarist of the Count Basie Band, Freddie Green. He used to just play two notes most of the time. The two notes are on the 3rd and 4th strings. It's a very percussive style of playing a strum on every beat using your fretboard hand to make the staccato rhythm.
Charleston
"The Charleston" was a song written for the dance of the 1920's - a classic rhythm and a must know for rhythm guitarists. It's the foundation for a lot of jazz rhythms and comping techniques, and also the perfect rhythm to use for faster tempos in bebop jazz and swing jazz. I demonstrate this classic rhythm over the blues in F.
Speedy Blues
This jazz rhythm is titled "Speedy Blues". This is a great rhythm to play for really fast bebop tempos. I use the blues in F and simply extend the rhythm pattern so we can keep up. Notice the pull off of the chords to give the effect of a horn section. Check it out!

Great rhythm course

Fantastic guitarist and even more fantastic teacher, I had the honor of seeing him play live when he came to Italy a few years ago. As a teacher he is very precise and at the same time manages to convey complex concepts in a simple way. As English is not my native language, Frank Vignola's way of speaking is easy for me to understand. As for the content of the course, I found it very interesting.
