About this course

Writers distinguish their work with a chosen vocabulary of words and phrases, along with their own creative application of grammar to tell their story and evoke an emotional response from their readers.

Musicians likewise distinguish their improvisations with a chosen vocabulary of riffs (short musical phrases), along with their own creative, thematic approach for connecting them together to tell a story and evoke an emotional response from their listeners.

Riffs are the building blocks of improvisation. Understanding how to create them, connect them, and then build upon them to craft compelling solos is an essential skill set for all musicians. Robben Ford’s Riff Revolution is a thorough examination of riffs for guitarists, with heavy emphasis on the creative process for constructing engaging solos with them.

”When thinking of music as a language, riffs are the statements used to tell a single story. Some stand alone, and some are strung together to convey a broader emotion. In essence, it's statement and resolution; call and response. In this course, we'll work through five blues progressions in a variety of keys, feels, and tempos. For each of them I'll first play through a complete rhythm or solo part, and then break it down for you section by section, riff by riff.”

Robben organized the coursed into 5 main sections, each featuring a popular blues progression, key, and feel. You’ll work through a G Shuffle, a Slow Blues in G, a Minor Blues in A, a Funky Vamp in C#, and a Rhumba in A.

Robben will first demonstrate a multi-chorus solo or rhythm part, over the corresponding rhythm track, and then he’ll break down each chorus emphasizing how the riffs were constructed, performed, and then connected across the entire improvisational performance. 20 performances will be examined across 69 individual breakdowns!

Robben demonstrates all of the riffs and improvisations over rhythm tracks and then breaks them down emphasizing the techniques and creative approaches you’ll need to get a grip on to play them correctly.

All of the performances are tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes. You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop and/or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, Robben generously includes all of the rhythm tracks for you to work with on your own.

Riff Revolution
Hi, I'm Robben Ford and welcome to Riff Revolution. When thinking of music as a language, riffs are like statements used to tell a single story. Some stand alone, and some are strung together to convey a broader emotion. In essence, it's statement and resolution; call and response. In this course, we'll work through five blues progressions in a variety of keys, feels, and tempos. For each of them I'll first play through a complete rhythm or solo part, and then break it down for you section by section, riff by riff.

Along with all the performances and breakdowns, you'll also get all of the riffs tabbed and notated, plus all of the rhythm tracks to work with on your own. So grab your guitar, and let's get started!
G Shuffle: 1st Chorus
Here's the first chorus of the G Shuffle.
G Shuffle: 1st Chorus
I open the first four bars of our 12-bar blues by setting up a thematic element, starting by playing it over the G chord, carrying the riff into the second bar (C chord). When I come back into the G chord I extend and develop the theme into something new. Now we have something to elaborate on in the next four bars.
G Shuffle: 1st Chorus
Let's look at the next four bars. I have a tendency to play things different ways as I work through them. I'll take a riff, then play it higher to develop it even more.
G Shuffle: 1st Chorus
In the last four bars, we've got an aggressive lick that uses triplets, something you'll see a lot of in the blues. Then we'll end the chorus with a classic walkdown.
G Shuffle: 2nd Chorus
Here's the second chorus of the G Shuffle.
G Shuffle: 2nd Chorus
Now let's look at the first four bars of the second chorus.

Achievable Blues techniques the Robben Ford way

Spend an hour with Robben and realize the secret of his success. Great tone and tension notes. Take the Blues scale to the next level by playing slower and using a pause to create tension (aka, feeling). No matter what your playing level, any time spent watching Robben is totally relaxing and you will instantly learn some subtle techniques that will change the way you approach Blues playing.

It's a great course, which serves not only the beginner but also shows the more advanced player how to build on the essentials. Robben is such a great teacher and his generous approach invites you to use all the material in your own way. That is simply great. Always great fun to learn from the giants of guitar. True Fire gives you another opportunity to expand your playing following your own pace and needs. Thank you so much Robben!
