Blues & Rock Guitar Heroes

About this course

Every musician has a long list of other musicians, past and present, that have inspired, influenced and helped shape their own sound and musicality. It's the natural evolution of music. We asked Mike Zito to pass on to you some of the key learnings that his Guitar Heroes passed on to him.

”Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King, and Johnny Winter have all greatly influenced my own sound as I’m sure they’ve influenced many other players. In this course, I’ll show you a few of the techniques and approaches that I picked up from each one of them.

Eddie Van Halen’s fast picking and reckless abandon instantly influenced my love for electric guitar. My world turned upside down when I heard the fuzz and phrasing of the great Jimi Hendrix! Eric Clapton’s tone and precise blues playing inspired me to another level and it was time to buy a Stratocaster and a tube screamer when I heard Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Texas Flood for the first time.

BB King brought me deeper into the blues and taught me to appreciate taking my time on every note and Johnny Winter turned it all upside down yet again with his fire and fury of fast paced Texas blues.”

In this course, Mike will first introduce his heroes to you and describe why he found them so influential. After each discussion, Mike will then present a performance study illustrating those influences in a musical context, over a backing track. A breakdown follows every performance and Mike will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches in play.

You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let’s dig in with Mike Zito!

Hey, I'm Mike Zito, and welcome to My Guitar Heroes.

Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King, and Johnny Winter have all greatly influenced my own sound as I'm sure they've influenced many other players. In this course, I'll show you a few of the techniques and approaches that I picked up from each one of them.

Eddie Van Halen
My all time guitar hero is Eddie Van Halen. He's literally the first guitarist I ever heard play the instrument. His joy and virtusoity is still with me today, in my head as to what an electric guitar should sound like. He was also very off the cuff and loose and free and that has certainly inspired me to be a "live" player. His fast picking and use of pentatonics really impacted my own playing.
A Bit of Flare
Here's a straight ahead rock beat with standard 12 bar changes in the key of A. I'll do my own thing here but incorporate some of my own "EVH" inspired licks.
A Bit of Flare
Of course my playing is pretty basic, I'm usually going for feel. The obvious pinch harmonics and pentatonic fast picking up the neck are all from the man himself.
A Bit of Flare
Notice the loose right hand when picking fast and the lazy left handed approach. The pinch harmonics are always fun and never really thought out, just thrown in for flare.
Jimi Hendrix
My #2 fave guitarist is the legend Jimi Hendrix. Jimi is only #2 because I heard EVH first! It took me a few years to understand what Jimi was doing...playing the blues and really playing emotionally and spiritually. His playing is still so inspiring to me and he is a part of what I do night after night on stage.
A Vocal Experience
I'm working with a cool bluesy track in the key of A. It's kind of a rock beat/slow blues jam.

Excellent guitar demonstration.

An excellent work of Mike Zito, it's demonstrated which have been his inspirations to play like this, personally I really like the style of Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, BB King and S R V, so I can say that this is a lesson that does justice to these legends of the guitar. Good content, has a variety of compositions that make learning enjoyable, the explanation is clear and straightforward. If you like these styles it's a very recommendable lesson.

Guitar Heroes - Zito Style

Good guitar solos in the style of the guitar heroes who influenced mike and nice stories about. But you can always hear the unmistakable Zito-style.
