Blues-Rock Guitar Heroes

About this course

Every musician has a long list of other musicians, past and present, that have inspired, influenced and helped shape their own sound and musicality. It's the natural evolution of music. We asked Matt Schofield to pass on to you some of the key learnings that his Guitar Heroes passed on to him.

”BB King, Albert King, Freddie King, Albert Collins, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan have all greatly influenced my own sound as I’m sure they’ve influenced many other players. In this course, I’ll show you a few of the techniques and approaches that I picked up from each one of them.

Starting out with BB King, the king of the blues and the root of it all for me and so many others - his deceptively simple approach is filled with deeply sophisticated musicality. The mighty Albert King is a dose of blues power, the king of string bending, and pure intensity and raw soul.

Freddie King, the Texas cannonball as he was known: Freddie touched on everything from country blues to funky blues rock and his groove was infectious to me as an aspiring player. Albert Collins, the master of the telecaster: he had an utterly unique style which has always filled me with joy and excitement.

Jimi Hendrix took the blues to new worlds and showed us all possibilities that we never even dreamed of. And finally, but certainly not least - Stevie Ray Vaughan! Stevie wrapped all of his influences into his own style and inspired a new generation of players to do the same.”

In this course, Matt will first introduce his heroes to you and describe why he found them so influential. After each discussion, Matt will then present a performance study illustrating those influences in a musical context, over a backing track. A breakdown follows every performance and he will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches in play.

”I feel privileged to be able to stand on the shoulders of all of these giants who pioneered and created the very vocabulary of blues guitar. They wrote the history of blues guitar and provided us all with a treasure trove of inspiration to draw on for years to come.”

You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let’s dig in with Matt Schofield!

BB King
BB King is where it all starts for me, and whether you realize it or not, for you as well. He's at the root of what we all do, be it his approach to vibrato and bending or his tone - he's ground zero for electric guitar.

Of course, he had his influences in T-Bone Walker, Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lonnie Johnson, but really what we know of as electric blues and subsequently rock guitar come from BB. He was the first person to really make it sing like a voice, and the first person to really make me want to play guitar.
Bb Regal Shuffle
Alright, this is a shuffle track inspired by the kind of groove BB would play back in the 60's on records like Live at the Regal. This is a "flat tire" shuffle, which means the snare is on the offbeat. This is a fun one to play over with BB in mind!

Albert King
In the big family tree of the history of blues guitar, after BB King comes Albert King. When I was starting out, I discovered BB first, then Stevie Ray Vaughan, but I was quickly informed that if I liked SRV then I really needed to listen to Albert King!

And, that's exactly right. I couldn't believe it: it was all the Stevie Ray licks but recorded in the 60's. Albert was the indisputably the master of bending, building on what BB did and doing what no one had done before. You can hear his influence everywhere, including Eric Clapton's solo on "Strange Brew" being lifted from Albert's "Pretty Woman".

Albert King was a larger than life presence (literally) that we'll try to capture here. Up next, we'll check out a performance in his style.
All Minor Blues Power
This is a minor blues in the style of Albert King, something he did often. We'll keep him in mind, taking the concepts of his playing and working it into things I might do.
