10 Blues-Rock Rhythms You MUST Know

About this course

Most guitar players spend more time learning "lead" guitar than they do working on their rhythm chops. Whether you're a pro, a weekend warrior, or just jam with your buds, you'll play far more rhythm guitar than lead and have a much better chance of getting and keeping the gig if you can play great rhythm guitar. TrueFire’s Blues-Rock Professor Jeff Scheetz presents 10 Blues Rock Rhythms You MUST know!

Jeff will explain and demonstrate all the key concepts and approaches along the way. Jeff first performs the licks over a jam track and then breaks it down note-by-note in this series of videos. Students get the video lessons, jam tracks, tab and notation. Ideal for intermediate and early advanced players.

Powered by TrueFire, you’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Get a grip on these 10 Blues Rock Rhythms and you'll possess enough blues-rock firepower to light up Texas, Chicago, and everything in between!

Deeper
Once again, what does this riff use to make it sound interesting? Inversions. Honestly, knowing your inversions and being able to use them effectively is maybe the most important thing you could do for your playing. Instead of using common shapes for the first three chords I am using inversions to keep the interesting sounds going. Then we follow those up with a Dm9 chord, which is a little different, and just adds to the vibe.
ZZ Hauwow
Another blues/rock staple of a riff is most notably identified with ZZ top and their tune La Grange. Although this groove can be heard on many blues tunes, Billy Gibbons and company reaally cemented this into a wider audience's psyche. Listen for this feel on other artists albums and you will be surprised at how often it is used.
Laid Back 6/8
Another 6/8 groove, but this one is a slow laid back feeling progression. Here you have a few variations of open string chords that can be moved to different positions. Use these various chords for your own creations. And be careful not to rush on this one - keep it meeeeelllllllooooowwwwwww...
Wool
Of course the classic Zepplin tune "Kashmir" is the most famous for using the technique of moving the low note of the chord up in half step increments. This riff will give you a bit of that sound while at the same time really working on your finger positions.
Multiple Stacks
Here we are using some inversions to make our chord progression interesting, some single note licks to keep it spicy, and a little chunking on the open A string for good measure! This one definitely sits on the fence between rock and blues, and depending on how you play it and what kind of tone you use - it could go either way.
Funky Munky
We can get some cool funky things going if we will just put the main focus on our right hand. THAT is where the funk comes from! This is a great riff to work on that right hand smooth stroke. If you are having touble with all of the muting that you need to do with your left hand, just go really slow and try to see which strings you need to have muted and then move the closest left hand finger over that string. Eventually that will become automatic.

I love this course because Jeff chose about as diverse a selection of riffs that you could possibly come across within the blues-rock genre, and he hits a lot of those "big" influences like Jimi Hendrix and Billy Gibbons. But he also throws in some "extras" for good measure, like a 6/8 rhythm, chord inversions, etc., so it's a little like getting some extra icing on your cake that you didn't expect.
