About this course

TrueFire’s Live Plus series enhances the learning experience of select and previously recorded TrueFire Live broadcasts with high-quality video, video-sync tab and notation, looping, jam tracks, Guitar Pro files, and all of the other learning tools available in TrueFire’s desktop, mobile, and streaming apps.

In this edition, Tim Lerch goes deeper and wider on the techniques, creative concepts, and performance approaches presented in the Chordal Improv edition of his Solo Jazz Pathways. Tim demonstrates fresh and original applications and variations of his chordal improvisation principles — and they’re ALL tabbed and video-synced!

You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and let’s go Live with Tim Lerch!

Welcome Tim Lerch
Today, we've very excited to have Tim Lerch with us in the studio! He'll be talking to us today about his new TrueFire course, Solo Jazz Pathways: Chordal Improv. Before we get into it, Tim will play us in with a tune and we'll be on our way!
About Tim Lerch
Welcome to this live broadcast from TrueFire Studios, we're very excited to have Tim Lerch here this week. We started talking to Tim Lerch years ago trying to get him in, being someone who does something special on the instrument.

He's one of the busiest and well-respected guitarists around today, playing in the legendary Pacific Northwest Gypsy jazz band Pearl Django. He's an internationally renowned solo guitarist with two of his own solo records and a sought after session guitarist.

Let's check in with Tim and get this show on the road! Buckle up, because you're gonna love it.
The Stars Align & Influences
Brad and Tim talk a bit about how Tim wound up doing a course with us, and about what he does on the guitar that's different from anyone else.

Tim talks about his influences, many of them not guitar players: musicians like piano players like Bill Evans, Art Tatum, and composers like Nelson Riddle and Billy May.
Styles of Jazz
Tim talks a little bit about some of the stylistic elements different type of jazz guitarists do and how they approach playing the changes and getting through a jazz tune.
Trivia & Viewer Locations
Some viewers shout out from around the world, and a quick trivia question about Tim before we move on to more content from his course.
Solo Jazz Performance Examples
Tim gets into what's in the course, which will give you a vocabulary of chordal passages that accompany the melody of a song. Here we'll look at how to build melodies from these chordal "neighborhoods" and how to add in the altered to the equation.

Great Supplement

This is a great supplement to his "complete" courses. Initially, I was disappointed there were not more performances. But don't let that stop you from getting this. Tim is such a great teacher and where this course (is it a course?) lacks a lot of tabbed performances, it makes up for this with tabbed teaching examples which are fantastic and insightful. He presents and demonstrates concepts that you can take and develop well beyond just the examples. The performance is more of a "here, do what I do," whereas the examples are more of a "here is an idea, see what you can do with it." If you are looking for something to appeal to your creative side, this will be a valuable aid as it has been for me. Besides, Tim is such an incredible teacher. He is so humble. His genuine happiness while playing is infectious.
