Themes for Compelling Songwriting (JamPlay)

About this course

Modern progressive guitar demands more than just chops—it requires vision, creativity, and a deep understanding of how to shape musical ideas into something truly memorable. In Themes for Compelling Songwriting, acclaimed guitarist and Intervals frontman Aaron Marshall takes you inside his personal songwriting process, offering a masterclass in riff creation, melodic development, and musical storytelling.

This isn’t just a course about how to play what Aaron plays—it’s about how to think like a composer. Through over 30 in-depth lessons, Aaron breaks down the concepts and techniques that drive his unique style, from phrasing and hybrid picking to melodic contour, chord progression analysis, and thematic development. He shows you how to craft compelling hooks using limitations, build riffs that evolve like sentences, and navigate complex harmony without losing the emotional core of the song.

You’ll follow Aaron step-by-step as he writes, refines, and arranges musical ideas in real time, offering insights into everything from inspiration and intuition to technical execution and musical philosophy. Along the way, you’ll gain the tools and mindset needed to break out of repetitive writing patterns and develop compositions that are both intricate and deeply expressive.

Whether you're a progressive player, a songwriter looking to sharpen your compositional voice, or simply a guitarist eager to explore new creative terrain, this course delivers a rare, behind-the-curtain look at how one of today’s most forward-thinking guitarists brings his music to life.

TrueFire is not like other lessons- this was my first, very impressed.

Well edited, very clear cameras. Aaron is a great communicator- those of us who are more in the intermediate category can really benefit from this lesson series. It’s one thing to sit around and practice your techniques and speed and expand your theory knowledge, but it a whole other thing to try and translate these skills to making music you enjoy playing and others enjoy listening to. He addresses exactly this. It was also enjoyable to see him explain things, just sitting with a guitar and showing snippets of what he’s thinking, because he’s a seriously badass player with great style. I have spent thousands over the years on music education, and tried so many different things. I legitimately am so excited about this resource. Being able to choose players and get “in the room” with them for such a reasonable price is something I can’t overstate the value of.
