50 Hard Rock Licks You MUST Know

About this course

Angus Clark’s 50 Hard Rock Licks You MUST Know will keep your blood boiling with this handpicked collection of mighty moves and thunderous lickage inspired by and respectfully borrowed from the masters of the genre. Angus focuses primarily on the evolved style of 70‘s and 80‘s hard rock brought to the air waves by Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, UFO, Ratt, Dokken, Rainbow, Deep Purple amongst many others.

This particular generation of Hard Rock bands produced dozens of rock guitar gods; Tony Iommi, Ritchie Blackmore, Randy Rhoads, Adrian Smith, Michael Schenker, Slash, Yngwie Malmsteen, Warren DeMartini, Dave Murray, Vivian Campbell, Zakk Wylde and George Lynch to name but a few. Their collective contributions took electric guitar to a new level of virtuosity way beyond mega-volume, distortion, power chords and the pentatonic scale.

To play in the game you need an arsenal of chops; trilling, sliding, modal variations, harmonized lead lines, sophisticated phrasing, expressive vibrato, muting, sweeps, shifting positions, dozens of new bending techniques , hammers, pull-offs, legato, open strings, chromatics, groupings and plenty of did-el-ee-bums. Angus covers it all in 50 Hard Rock Licks You MUST Know!

All of the licks are first presented in context over a rhythm track, followed by a detailed breakdown of the lick along and the techniques being employed to perform it. Everything is tabbed and notated, plus you'll also get all of the rhythm tracks to practice with on your own.

Keep your bloodline fertile and your amp dialed to 10. Long live Rock & Roll!

50 Hard Rock Licks
I love hard rock and I love playing hard rock guitar. In coming up with the licks for this course I discovered so much about what makes the legendary players similar and also different. I'm talking about Sabbath, Ozzy, Priest, Scorpions, Maiden, Thin Lizzy, UFO, Ratt, Dokken, Rainbow, Deep Purple, and all that good stuff. Bands that made records that I played on my turntable until I wore them out.

To summarize the formal elements, this stuff is pentatonic plus. Home base is the pentatonic scale but it's amped up and stretched out and we're adding scale tones and modal material on top. The vibrato is big. The hair is long. Let's get started.
Something Wicked
Watch how we add on a few scale tones outside the minor pentatonic to open up a whole new palette to work from.
Trilling and Sliding
Tony Iommi is the master of trilling and sliding. Use the second degree of the scale to get that sound.
Keep It Simple
This is just about the first lick I learned off of a record. Now you know it too. Let's see where it takes you.
Got To Be Real
A minor triad is a part of the pentatonic scale. It's simple but super effective.
Sabbath Shuffle
A heavy shuffle is a hallmark of the Sabbath sound, here's a lick you can really dig in on.
Evil Neighbor Notes
We're adding scale tones just adjacent to the pentatonic to get you into the Dorian scale.
