About this course

Welcome to Play Rock Guitar 8: Advanced Rhythm Approaches for late intermediate to advanced students of Rock guitar.

This Rock Learning Path core course is presented by 5 top TrueFire educators: Jeff Scheetz, Shane Theriot, Carl Verheyen, Chris Buono and Massimo Varini.

The Advanced Rhythm Approaches curriculum is comprised of select Rock guitar lessons from the educators’ existing TrueFire course libraries.

Guitarists with advanced rhythm guitar skills write their own ticket with respect to paying or playing opportunities. Other musicians love to round out their rhythm section with solid, versatile rhythm guitarists. Pros will always get the most lucrative gigs, and amateurs will always get to play with the very best. The video guitar lessons in this core course will focus on strengthening and broadening your rhythm skills to an advanced level.

Play Rock Guitar 8: Advanced Rhythm Approaches is organized into 3 sections. In the first section you will look at essential advanced Rock rhythms and get your playing ramped up. Section number 2 has you playing through a batch of Performance Studies that will cover a ton of important Rock feels. In section 3 you will look at what is possible when you have two guitars playing together and what each one should be playing.

When you’ve completed the lessons here in Advanced Rhythm Approaches, you’ll find more lessons focused on rhythm in Advanced Rhythm Principles, also a Play Rock Guitar 8 core course.

The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.

You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.

Take as much time as you need to work through each video guitar lesson before moving on to the next lesson. If you want to dig deeper or wider into any of the topics covered in this core course, check out the recommended supplementary courses in your learning path where you’ll find more examples, techniques and insight from top TrueFire educators.

Essential Rhythms
In this first section you will work on some more advanced Rock rhythms. It is always good to be able to pull out some different feels in your rhythm practice sessions.

TIP! Being a good rhythm guitarist starts with having a good sense of timing and being able to play in the pocket. But once you have a good handle on that, then you need to expand your options - both rhythmically and harmonically.

A great way to do this is by listening to other players who are great rhythm guitarists. Hear how they apply different variations and make note of what their choices are.

It helps to break your rhythm practice into those two areas - work on rhythm variations and different feels and grooves. Then work on using other harmonic options, different chord inversions and voicings. If you systematically experiment with testing out other options you will naturally gravitate towards the ones that are YOUR style, and you can further develop those, and then you will become that hip rhythm player that other people listen to!
Indie
Indie - Rhythm #5 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jeff Scheetz and is sourced from 50 Blues Rock Rhythms You MUST Know.

While this one may be best played with horn-rimmed glasses and jet black hair covering at least one eye, wearing black "skinny" jeans, it can also be beneficial to those of us who are not alt rockers. There are some really good stretches here, and of course the droning open strings give it a stable feel.
Chilly funk
Chilly funk - Rhythm #14 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jeff Scheetz and is sourced from 50 Blues Rock Rhythms You MUST Know.

I really dig this style of playing, which I am sure can be heard in plenty of my songs, whether I mean to or not! I can't help it! This riff is funky, and it is based around the Cm pentatonic scale. I am using double stops and some hammer ons to create something interesting out of just the notes of the pentatonic scale. I do bang out that little m6 chord that is extra sick sounding - that makes this a GREAT lick to play a C Dorian scale over - try it!
Rainbow Power
Rainbow Power - Rhythm #39 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jeff Scheetz and is sourced from 50 Blues Rock Rhythms You MUST Know.

Some of the classic rock bands like Rainbow, Montrose, and maybe even some Black Sabbath used a heavy chord based riff to sound ominous. This riff is a way to take a shuffle beat, but rather than doing a normal "blues" thing over it, you can heavy it up a bit and make a rocking tune. Kick on the fuzz for this one and you will be in 70s rock heaven.
Human Capo
Human Capo - Rhythm #9 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jeff Scheetz and is sourced from 50 Blues Rock Rhythms You MUST Know.

Here is a lick that will test your stretching ability. If you work on getting your open chords down by using your first finger as a capo, and basically using the CAGED way of thinking, it will really open the fingerboard up to you. Just play this riff in every position to really master the shapes!
D open up
D open up - Rhythm #16 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jeff Scheetz and is sourced from 50 Blues Rock Rhythms You MUST Know.

Using a drone note, like in this case the open D string, can be a cool way to tie a riff together. While we are moving on the G string, that open D keeps the foundation. This is heard in many songs (think Collective Soul) and can be used in a rock context that is heavy, or more "indie" feeling.

Very helpful

This course is very helpful for learning some advanced rhythms and timings. It also teaches alternate ways to play chords, and how to play/harmonize with another guitar. The instructors are great and explain things very well.
