About this course

Welcome to Play Rock Guitar 3: Tools & Techniques - the third milestone of your TrueFire Learning Path journey towards becoming a solid Rock guitar player.

This Rock Learning Path core course is presented by 3 top TrueFire educators: Angus Clark, Chris Buono, and Jeff Scheetz.

They’ll guide your development of the essential skills and get up and running quickly -- no reading music, no boring exercises, no tedious theory to struggle through. In fact, you’ll play your way through the entire course.

In Play Rock Guitar 1 and 2, you built up your vocabulary of Rock chords and licks; learned how to play several classic Rock songs; and can now solo and improvise a little bit. Here in Play Rock Guitar 3: Tools & Techniques, you’ll learn a variety of killer Rock licks, more sophisticated chords and songs, and more essential techniques to power your soloing and improv. You’ll learn how to connect licks across the neck and build more interesting solos. You’ll also learn how to play new popular chord shapes, a great Funk rock groove, and a Santana style solo. You’ll wrap up the course with lessons on essential rock techniques including Tapping, Pedal points, and playing arpeggios.

The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.

You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.

Take as much time as you need to work through each video guitar lesson before moving on to the next lesson. If you want to dig deeper or wider into any of the topics covered in this core course, check out the recommended supplementary courses in your learning path where you’ll find more examples, techniques and insight from top TrueFire educators.

Minor Pentatonic Shape 2
Of course our 5 note minor pentatonic scale has limitations when you only play in one spot. In this lesson you will learn how to take those notes up the neck as you work on pattern 2. Moving around the neck will be an important skill to have as you start to build your own solos, so spend some time on the next few lessons and get these patterns and licks under your fingers.
Practice Session 1
In this Practice Session you will be playing along with the instructor. Take your time and don't rush through it.

Practice this as many times as you need to before moving on.
Connecting Rock Lick 1
In this lesson we are looking at putting our two minor pentatonic scale patterns together. Shifting between the patterns might be tricky at first but as you get it into your muscle memory it will get easier as you go.
Practice Session 2
Let's have some fun! In this Practice Session we jam with the band! Take your time, don't worry about doing it perfectly the first time, just keep going over it until you have it all down smooth. Then you are ready to move on.
Minor Pentatonic Shape 3
Now it's on to pattern number 3 of our minor pentatonic scale. So many rock guitarists have used this shape in classic songs. Work on the fingering and make sure your fingers are staying close to the fretboard and you are using minimum movement!
Practice Session 3
Practice with precision. That is how you will get this down. Not rushing through it or losing your focus. Keep your focus on playing this perfectly and with the instructor.

Way to get started!

These lessons will get you on the right path for a solid foundation right from the start. I know, I’ve taken a LOT of self-taught courses over the years and kept realizing I had holes where I missed some techniques. Finally, I just started over with this set of lessons when I found Truefire. It filled in all the missing holes!
