Play Rock Guitar 2: Rhythm & Lead Fundamentals

About this course

Welcome to Play Rock Guitar 2: Rhythm & Lead Fundamentals - the second leg of your TrueFire Learning Path journey towards becoming a solid Rock guitar player.

This Rock Learning Path core course is presented by 3 top TrueFire educators: Angus Clark, Chris Buono, Jeff Scheetz and Jeff McErlain.

They’ll guide your development of the essential skills and get up and running quickly -- no reading music, no boring exercises, no tedious theory to struggle through. In fact, you’ll play your way through the entire course.

In Play Rock Guitar 1 you learned a couple of songs and riffs, along with a handful of chords and rhythms. Here in Play Rock Guitar 2: Rhythm & Lead Fundamentals, you’re going to venture even further down the path with scales, soloing, more crucial rock rhythms and more cool chords. You’ll also dive into licks and soloing concepts, and barre chords that open up the entire rock songbook for you.

The educators demonstrate all of the key examples over jam tracks (where and when applicable) to simulate a real-world application, in a musical context. All of the key examples are also tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes.

You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, you’ll have all of the available jam tracks to work with on your own.

Take as much time as you need to work through each video guitar lesson before moving on to the next lesson. If you want to dig deeper or wider into any of the topics covered in this core course, check out the recommended supplementary courses in your learning path where you’ll find more examples, techniques and insight from top TrueFire educators.

Grab your guitar and let's get started!
Minor Pentatonic Scale
In this lesson you will be working on the minor pentatonic scale. This scale is probably the most used scale in rock soloing. Everyone from AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones to Journey and Def Leppard have used this scale in countless solos. So take your time and make sure you get it down with good technique as you will be using it a lot!
Practice Session 1
In this Practice Session you will be playing along with the instructor. Take your time and don't rush through it.

Practice this as many times as you need to before moving on.
Rock Soloing Basics
There is a lot more that goes into a solo than just playing up and down a scale! So learning various soloing techniques like bending, sliding, hammer ons and pull offs will help your scale start to sound more like a solo. Practicing the techniques by themselves will prepare you for when it is time to lay them down in a full solo.
Minor Pentatonic Lick 1
Licks are the backbone that make up many a solo. Whether it is a rock solo, blues solo or any other style, it is likely that the guitarist playing it has a good amount of licks in their bag.
Practice Session 2
Let's have some fun! In this Practice Session we jam with the band! Take your time, don't worry about doing it perfectly the first time, just keep going over it until you have it all down smooth. Then you are ready to move on.
Minor Pentatonic Lick 2
Work this lick until you can play it smoothly with the jam track. One of the secrets to being able to utilize rock licks is that you have to be able to feel where in the groove they should go. Not just play it over the top of the progression without thinking but really be able to get it in the right place. That will make your licks sound and feel great!
