Essentials: Solo Acoustic Grooves

About this course

The moment a solo guitarist takes the stage, something magical happens. The room falls silent, the audience's attention is fixed, and every eye is drawn to the musician and their guitar. There's something undeniably captivating about watching a guitarist play solo, and it's been mesmerizing audiences for decades.

Mike Zito knows this better than anyone — he’s played thousands of solo gigs with just an acoustic guitar. Mike’s Solo Acoustic Grooves edition of Essentials passes on 10 of his favorite solo guitar grooves, which can be infinitely tweaked into hundreds of your own variations

”Whether I’m playing a big stage or a small, intimate club — getting the audience engaged, moving in their seats, or dancing on the floor is an “essential” key to a successful performance.

I’ll show you 10 versatile, rootsy acoustic grooves that I use all of the time to spark up the audience and liven up my sets.

You can adjust the tempo, and key, or even modify the rhythmic feel to make them work for your songs and performances. Play them stand-alone or insert one of the grooves within one of the songs you’re performing.”

You’ll have all of TrueFire’s advanced learning tools at your finger tips to personalize your workspace and learn at your own pace.

You can loop, slow down, or speed up any section of a lesson. Plus, all of the tab and notation is synced to the videos for the optimal learning experience. You’ll also get tab and standard notation files to print out and Guitar Pro files.

Grab your guitar, and let’s dig in with Mike Zito!

Mississippi Groove
Alright, let's talk about the Mississippi Groove. It's based on a song I wrote called Mississippi Knights. It's a simple groove with just three chords - E, A, and G chords.

Despite its simplicity, these chords offer a lot of possibilities. We're going to explore how to create a good rhythm and groove, even without a backing group. You and your guitar are all you need to get something happening.

This is a great course to start with, and I'll be using a pick to play the guitar, but I'll also be incorporating hand percussion. We'll go over all the details in the breakdown after the performance. I'm confident you'll enjoy it, and it's a skill everyone should have - being able to pick up a guitar and create music by yourself.

You can get people interested and even get them dancing, all with just your guitar. Sometimes, it's less about intricate picking techniques and more about playing the guitar with your entire body. So, let's dive in and check it out.

Country Honk
Alright, let's talk about the Country Honk groove. It's a little bit bluesy, a little bit honky tonk, and a little bit country. It has that laid-back Texas vibe that makes you want to grab a beer and relax.

The chords are simple - just the A, E, and D chords. It has an old-school bluesy feel, but it's not a shuffle. Instead, it has a raw and honky tonk sound that's reminiscent of classic country music.

Once again, this is a simple groove with just three chords, but there are so many possibilities for what you can do with them. I highly recommend giving this one a try.

Fun break from the theory

Drills are important but this kicks off immediately into rhythmic grooves you don't want to put down. Awesome, applicable and fun, I keep coming back to these.
