Trading Solos: Jazz Standards Vol. 1

About this course

In Frank Vignola’s Jazz Standard edition of Trading Solos, you’ll trade solos with Frank over five popular jazz standard progressions, in a variety of keys and feels. Frank kicks off the course sharing some of his tone tips to help you get a great jazz sound. And then for each of the five progressions, Frank will show you a collection of jazz phrases and comping approaches. You’ll then take turns applying those ideas, trading solos, and comping for each other over all of the tracks.

”The best way to get become a better player is to play with others! That's where the real learning happens, but for many folks, finding good players to play with can be a challenge. But that’s not the case here… I have a great bassist and drummer for us to jam with because it's important to play with solid rhythm sections that really groove. I’ll share a few of my favorite licks on these jazz standard chord progressions with a solid palette of voicings, grooving comping rhythms and we’ll have a blast jamming together!”

For each of the five jazz standard progression jam tracks, Frank will show you a handful of licks and comping approaches that you can use over the tracks as you trade solos with Frank. Then, you'll take turns applying those ideas, trading solos and comping for each other.

Frank will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the key examples and performances. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tool to sync the tab and notation to the video and can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Trading Solos: Jazz Standards
Hi, I'm Frank Vignola and welcome to this Jazz Standard edition of Trading Solos.

One of the best ways to learn new moves is by jamming with other guitar players. When you're comping, you're picking up new lines and ideas from their solos. When you're soloing, and they're comping, you get to try out your own concepts and pick up on some new rhythm guitar moves.

In this edition of Trading Solos, we'll jam together over five of the most commonly encountered jazz standard progressions, in a variety of keys and feels. I'll start by sharing some tone tips and approaches to help you get a great sound. And then for each of the five progressions, I'll show you a handful of moves and comping approaches that we can both use.

We'll then take turns applying those ideas, trading solos, and comping for each other over the backing tracks.

Everything is tabbed and notated and you'll have all the backing tracks to work with on your own. You can loop and slow down the videos to work with the lessons at your own pace.

Jazz Style Tips
Here are some tips on producing good tone and some of the gear that I use for performing and studio.
Track 1: Autumn Changes
The first track that we'll solo over is an 8 measure progression which is the first 8 bars of the classic standard, "Autumn Leaves". It's in the key of G major. It starts with a ii-V7-I in the the key of G and then a ii-V7-i in the key of E minor.
Track 1: Autumn Changes
In this segment, I discuss 3 comping techniques: chord fragments, using a descending counter line with chords and using a common tone on top of each of the chords.
Track 1: Autumn Changes
In this segment, I discuss 3 lick ideas that can be used over this classic progression. The first is a classic style bebop lick, and the second lick is based on octaves. Octaves were used and mastered by the great Wes Montgomery, so it's important to touch on this sound. The third lick idea is based on the diminished over dominant sound, which I first heard Charlie Parker use so fluently and musically.
Track 1: Autumn Changes
In this playalong preview, I'll demonstrate the ideas discussed in the comping and lick idea section.
Let's Trade Solos
Now let's trade some solos. I'll comp for you when you're soloing and please remember to comp for me when I'm playing a solo.

Practical Tipps and Tricks

Useful and insightful tipps for both comping and soloing over some (very) important jazz progressions. I like the concept here, using not too much information and overly long melodic and harmonic ideas instead focusing on shorter but nevertheless great sounding ones. Easy to grasp them and integrate them in ones own repertoire
