Jazzin the Blues Vol. 2

About this course

Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Scott Henderson, and Oz Noy are just a few examples of top-notch guitarists who are widely respected for jazzing up their blues improvisations with jazz phrasing and tonalities. On the other end of the scale, most students of blues guitar struggle when it comes to jazzing up their blues lines because they haven’t yet been exposed to jazz harmonies and melodic approaches.

In this second volume of Jazzin’ the Blues, Frank Vignola expands your jazzed blues skills by guiding you through another 20 performance studies, each focused on a new jazz harmonic concept.

”Blues gave birth to jazz. Yet, a lot of blues players are challenged when it comes to jazzing up their blues lines. I’ve prepared 20 studies to help students get up to speed by applying a range of jazz harmonies to what they already know. We’ll start as simple as adding a single tone to the pentatonic scale and then progress to integrating more sophisticated tonalities in their lines. Throughout the course, we'll be working exclusively with standard 1-4-5 blues progressions, in a variety of keys and feels.”

Frank organized the course into 10 sets of lessons. Each set focuses on a specific jazz harmonic approach and each features two solo performance studies. Frank will first perform the soloing performance study and then break it down note-for-note explaining the underlying harmonic approach.

You’ll learn how to “jazz up your blues” by playing your way through the course — no tedious theory or boring exercises to struggle through.

All of the performance studies are tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes. You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop and/or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, Frank includes all of the backing tracks for you to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar and let’s jazz up our blues with Frank Vignola!

Jazzin' the Blues Vol. 2
Hi, I'm Frank Vignola, and welcome to Jazzin' the Blues: Volume 2.

Blues gave birth to jazz. Yet, a lot of jazz players seem to struggle playing the blues. And a lot of blues players don't even know where to start jazzing up their blues lines. There's a big disconnect that really shouldn't exist.

In this second volume of Jazzin' The Blues, we'll connect the dots by working through a series of 20 soloing performance studies, each one focused on a particular harmonic concept.

It could be as simple as adding a single tone to the pentatonic scale or integrating more sophisticated tonalities in your lines. Throughout the course, we'll be working exclusively with standard 1-4-5 blues progressions, in a variety of keys and feels.

For example, we'll look at flavoring our blues lines with the major 9th, chromatic, bluesy chromatic, double stops, Dorian mode, implying two five, bluesy two five, the major 3rd, neighboring tones, and harmonic minor scale

For each study, I'll first perform a solo that demonstrates the harmonic concept and then I'll break it down for you in detail. Everything is tabbed and notated, and you'll have all of the rhythm tracks to work with on your own...

So, grab your guitar, and let's get started!
The Major 9th
In this set, we concentrate on the perfect 9th of every chord. We jam on an A shuffle blues. In the 1st chorus, I use dominant 9th arpeggios. In the second chorus, I use a cool triplet pattern.

Chromatic Scale
In this set, we concentrate on the chromatic scale, using all 12 notes in the blues. We jam on a standard D blues in a calypso style groove. In both of the choruses, I connect chord tones using the chromatic scale. In the 2nd chorus, I implement a double time feel. Check it out.

Frank Vignola's Jazzin' the Blues Vol. 2

In this course everything is pretty easy. You can start spicing your bluesplaying with jazz inluence without reading three books of jazz theory and learning all modes of harmonic minor scale. Of course you do it later ;=)
