Country Licks of the Legends

About this course

Understanding and incorporating the licks of classic country music legends into your playing is a valuable practice for any country guitarist. Their techniques, melodies, and styles form the foundation upon which modern country music is built, and building your knowledge of their chops will provide you with technical benefits as well as a richer connection to the genre’s heritage.

In DJ Phillips’ “Country Licks of the Legends,” you’ll go on a journey that takes you back to the country pioneers of the 1950s, all the way to the superstars of the 1990s. You’ll learn about the techniques used in classic country such as complex fingerpicking and hybrid picking, and will expand your own musical vocabulary in the process. By the end of this course you’ll have a deeper appreciation for this All-American genre, and will be able to incorporate a new repertoire of phrases and techniques into your own playing.

“I had a great time exploring the history of classic country music from Hank Williams in the 50s all the way up to Garth Brooks in the 90s, and I'm excited to show you what we've done with this look back. We're going to examine a lot of different techniques, from the more jazz-influenced early classic country music to some of the chicken picking and rhythm techniques across the scope.”

You’ll have TrueFire’s interactive learning tools at your fingertips to customize your workspace and learn at your own pace.

The demonstrations and performances are tabbed, notated, and synced to the video lessons with controls for looping, slow motion, fretboard animation, and other tools designed to accelerate your progress.

You’ll also get tab and standard notation files to print out, downloadable Guitar Pro files, and backing tracks to practice and record with.

Grab your guitar, and let’s dig in with DJ Phillips!

Country Licks of the Legends
Hi, this is DJ Phillips and welcome to the Classic Country Lick Pack. In this pack, we’ll explore the history of classic country music from the 50s through the 90s. We’ll examine a variety of techniques, from the jazz influences of early classic country music to chicken picking and rhythm techniques across the genre.

Before starting, you should have basic fretboard awareness and some knowledge of major and pentatonic scales. This will make the course much easier. I had a great time exploring the history of classic country music, from Hank Williams in the 50s to Garth Brooks in the 90s, and I’m excited to share it with you.
Hank Williams #1
In this first lick, we're exploring a Hank Williams-inspired riff reminiscent of his 50s music, focusing on the key of D.

Willie Nelson
This next classic country lick we're going to look at is in the style of Willie Nelson from the late 60s and early 70s, the style that he became famous for.
Dolly Parton

Kitty Wells
