Primer & Looping Foundations
Before we dive in and set our first loop, let's look at a few pedals to see which one is right for you, and go through the features live loopers have and make sure you've got all the setting correct before we begin.
Types of Loop Pedals
A brief description of the most commonly used loop pedals. There are many brands available on the market, though all of which operate in a similar way. For the majority of this course, I'll be using the most common pedal - Boss RC30. Any other loop pedal will be fine for use through this course.
Setting Basic Levels
Prior to using your pedal for performance, it is very important to know the correct setup of your signal chain and levels. This video will help you to set this correctly.
A Couple Things to Note
Some basic functions such as Delete, Record, Overdub, Stop. This is a basic overview of the features of this particular loop station, the Boss RC30.
The First Seamless Loop
So in this next section, we're going to dive in and create your first loop. I'm going to talk about the percussion elements you can use on your guitar as well as chords, trying to create a seamless loop. Let's get working!
Recording Your First Guitar Layer
The first and most important layer is the foundation of even the largest looping setups. Here we work on timing and coordination with your foot to record, play and stop.

Disappointing Video That Left Me Frustrated
I don't want to be negative because I think Carl is a good musician and singer, but I find it very frustrating that he completely ignores the entire subject of CHANGES in a song and how to use a looper to create them correctly. I'm talking about Verses, Bridges, Chorus, Verse etc. ---- basic Beginning, Middle, End ----- that follow traditional song forms of 95% of popular music in all genres. His demonstrations of his "Songs" are actually just examples of what are correctly called "Vamps". These are short repeating chord forms with different rhythms. They don't resolve until you decide to stop them. They are great for practicing and for improvising, and working out licks and sounds etc, but these are mostly NOT songs to my ear and can soon become boring. Yes there are many examples of famous classic tunes which only use a couple of chords (Bo Diddley, "All Blues" by Miles Davis, etc), but these are in the minority. In the majority from the Beatles to the great jazz standards we have song forms like A-A-B-A or A-B-A-B etc. In the bluest country, and rock and roll have 12 bar forms etc. But in all of these, we have forms that begin, make changes, and resolve. For someone like me who wants to learn how to use a looper to make these "Traditional Song Forms With Changes" there is very little information or serious examples to be found anywhere. I find it very frustrating that the vast majority of people who are into looping do not seem to be into this. WHY? They are content with Vamps only. It's very difficult to find examples of people actually using Boss or other loopers to achieve more sophisticated forms, and what options these different loopers have to allow for this. I'm on a learning curve and hope that I will be able to solve this question.

throw away the user manual
Carl Wockner goes far beyond featuring an entertaining user manual, even though you might through that away after working through his Artistic Looping. He shares his vast experience, helps avoiding steps that won’t work in the end anyway, making musical sense with sonic choices in the right order. This course is such a good help for getting the loops right, having fun without wasting time, I love it!
