Welcome to Guitar Lab: Blues Riff Blueprints Vol. 1.

If you're going to build a house, you better have some blueprints to follow. This series of courses will provide sonic blueprints for strong effective blues motifs. These blueprints will be presented through melodic formulas as applied to the I7, IV7, and V7 chords. The term blueprint will also provide a systematic organization of various layouts of the melodic motifs on the fretboard. An emphasis on rhythmic organization of the pitches in a motif will give you countless ways to apply them to both shuffle and straight 1/8 grooves. You will also be given technical suggestions for improving your execution of these blues riffs, and also for creating variations of a melodic idea.

The Three Chords
This lesson examines the three chords used in a typical 12 bar Dominant blues.
Minor Pentatonic Scale Pt. 1
All scales generate modes. These modes allow the soloist to play vertically which articulates the chord within the melody. This lesson demonstrates mode I of the minor pentatonic scale.
Minor Pentatonic Scale Pt. 2
All scales generate modes. These modes allow the soloist to play vertically which articulates the chord within the melody. This lesson demonstrates mode III of the minor pentatonic scale.
Minor Pentatonic Scale Pt. 3
All scales generate modes. These modes allow the soloist to play vertically which articulates the chord within the melody. This lesson demonstrates mode IV of the minor pentatonic scale.
Playing Over The I7 Pt. 1
I will demonstrate the application of mode I of the min pent scale over the I7 chord.
Playing Over The I7 Pt. 2
Dominant 7 chords consist of a root, 3rd, 5th and a b7. The 3 and b7 are the guide tones for a 7 chord.These two notes form a tri-tone interval (6 half-steps) which divides the octave in half. It is important to see these guide tones on the fretboard.

Blueprints For Great Blues Riffs!

This is the first course in Brad Carlton's excellent 3 part series examining various motifs and common tones that can be played on a 12 bar blues progression. The focus here is on what to play on the I7 chord, with an emphasis on the rhythmic organisation of the pitches in a motif - providing countless ways to apply them to both shuffles and straight 1/8 grooves. As usual, Brad leaves no stone unturned. Great material!
