30 Gristleman Guitar Licks

About this course

In this collection of Gristleman Guitar Licks, Greg Koch cherry-picked 30 of his own favorite licks that he uses frequently as idea starters for fills and solos. From big bends and vibrato to chicken picking and whammy bar techniques, you’ll find countless ways to vary them for any genre and make them your own.

”Why should a player build a vocabulary of licks? For the same reason we learn a vocabulary of words — to have a variety of ways to express ourselves musically.

Personally, I’m not really concerned with learning solos entirely. When I hear a phrase or lick that’s ear-catching and appeals to me, I want to add that to my own little stew, my own vocabulary.

I'll show you many of my go-to gristle guitar techniques like big old bends, and vibratos, behind -the-nut squeals, hybrid picking, chicken picking, whammy bar skullduggery and more — the whole nine yards!”

You’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to loop, slow down any video so you can practice and play along with me at your own pace.”

For each of these 30 Gristleman licks, Greg will give you a demonstration over a backing track, and then show you how to play it. Greg uses sections of his original recording tracks as backing tracks for the course.

Greg will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the licks. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are also included to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar, and let's ‘pound the gristle’ with Greg Koch!

30 Gristleman Guitar Licks
Hey it’s Greg Koch. Welcome to 30 Gristleman Guitar Licks You MUST Know!

Why should a player build a vocabulary of licks?

How did you build your own vocabulary of licks?

I’m happy to share 30 of my own licks that I think you’ll get a lot of mileage out of in your own playing.

For each of these 30 licks, I’ll first give you a demonstration over a backing track, and then I’ll show you how to play it.

I’m using original tracks from my own records.

You’ll practice each lick by playing along with me AND you’ll have all of TrueFire’s learning tools to work with so you can learn and practice them at your own pace.

As we play our way through the collection, I’ll also show you many of my go-to gristle guitar techniques like………

Whammy-bar flutter, Chickin picking, hybrid picking, vibratos, slides, bends, pedal steel bends, and dive bombs.

So if you’re ready, grab your guitar, and let’s pound the gristle!
Swell Moanin'
Let's jump right in with a lil' somethin I call Swell Moanin! It involves a little volume slur and palm action on the tremolo arm a.k.a. Mr. Wiggles. First I'll play the lick then I'll break it down for you in detail!
Minor Blues Sweep
This is a sweep lick I got from the great Chet Atkins. I was never big into the shredding world that went on with sweep picking so when I heard Chet do it I was like "What is that!" and had to give it a shot myself. This is a great tool to add to your box! First I'll play for you then I'll break it all down!
Rakey Money Shot
Lick 3 is what I call a "Rakey Money Shot"! The name is a little weird but the lick is a lot of fun. First I'll play the lick then I'll break it down for you in detail!
Blues Filth
This next lick is a D blues and it's something I call Blues Filth! Honestly, I could call all of my licks this but let's jump into it! First I'll play the lick then I'll break it down for you in detail!
Organic Goodness
Now let's get into some Organic Goodness! This one is in A minor pentatonic. First I'll play the lick then I'll break it down for you in detail!
4th Chord Stabs
Now it's time to bite into some tasty 4th Chord Stabs. Don't let the name fool you, these licks are delicious! First I'll play it for you, then I'll break it down for you in detail!

Killer licks!

I love Greg Koch's playing, and had to cop some of his licks for some new ideas. I dig the quirkiness to some of these.

So many ideas!

Greg is one of those guitar players you recognize upon hearing just a few notes. His style and tone are unique. I can't play half the licks in this course, none of them with the expressiveness and ease he demonstrates. But it is in the effort, the inspiration, and the generation of ideas that is where the real gold lies. He does unspeakable things with bends that make him just a monster regarding expressiveness. This course is not so much a note-matching challenge (and it truly is that!) as a treasure chest of discovery, reinvention, and stepping stones to finding your uniqueness. And it is all done with humor, wit, and soulful playfulness. A course worth often reviewing to mine those ideas and incorporate them into your playing, writing, and thought exercises.
