Guitar Zen: Pentatonic Double-Stops

About this course

Most blues and rock players learn how to play a “double stop” fairly early on (remember learning that Johnny B Goode riff back in the day?). Most players also tend to use double-stops primarily as a lead guitar embellishment. Yet, learning how to harness the firepower of double stops with your rhythm playing is what will take your chops to a whole new world.

Eric Haugen’s Pentatonic Double-Stops edition of Guitar Zen is your fast-track passport to that new world. Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eddie Van Halen, Mark Knopfler, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and John Mayer are just a few of the artists highly respected for their masterful use of double-stops when playing rhythm guitar.

”I’ll show you five simple CAGED shapes and five pentatonic shapes and walk you through ALL of the possibilities by pointing out every “double-stop-ortunity” – major or minor, jazzy or bluesy, folky or groovy. We’ll practice and play every double-stop move and fill together using backing tracks for musical context.

From the very first set of lessons, you’ll grasp how easy it is to instantly visualize and then play tasty double-stop phrases and fills using the scales and shapes you already know.

Play your way through the entire course, and you’ll be able to play an unlimited variety of double-stop fills for any chord, in any key, anywhere on the neck.”

You’ll have TrueFire’s intuitive learning tools at your finger tips to personalize your workspace and learn at your own pace.

Tab and notation is synced to the video lessons. You’ll be able to loop, slow down, or speed up any section of a lesson. Printable tab charts and standard notation are also included, along with Guitar Pro files and practice jam tracks.

Grab your guitar, and let’s power up our rhythm chops with Eric Haugen!

Guitar Zen: Pentatonic Double Stops
Hey, I'm Eric Haugen. If your chord choices and rhythm guitar parts are sounding tired and boring, Double Stops will dress them up relatively easily.

There’s five CAGED shapes and five pentatonic shapes which means ANYWHERE you can play a chord, there's a whole series of double stops right under your fingers.

In this series, I’m going to walk you through all of the possibilities – in every spot on the neck, every “double stopportunity” – Major or minor, jazzy or bluesy, folky or groovy.

Surf your way through this course and watch your rhythm chops transcend to the next level. Cover the fretboard with double stops all in one series, they’re all here.

Before We Begin...
A quick review of the CAGED system. Every chord you know appears 5 different ways, with a major pentatonic attached right to it.
The Splinter Self - Playing the Changes
To play to changes, you need 3 versions of yourself: The you that's in the moment and doing the stuff, the you that's across the room rooting for you, and most importantly "the coach." He's paying attention to the whole song and keeping track of the chords.
5th Fret Am: Flatties & Diagonals
We start with the most-known place: 5th fret Am and Minor Pentatonic. Then we explore the spatial reasoning skills necessary to find the "double opportunities."
8th Fret F: Flatties & Diagonals
In real life, the chords change. So, we explore the doublestops at the closest possible F chord.
Pentatonic Double Stops Etude 1
An Etude that demonstrates what it sounds like to use these ideas to play over Am to F in a relaxed way.
Pentatonic Double Stops Etude 1
We walkthrough how I sight the chords and then do simple doublestop melodies with them.

Teaching double stops AND sound appreciation

Awsome and very practical course, with Eric’s distinct way of teaching, making the learning process something super fun and applicable right away. Don’t stay in this course alone though! Go through all of Eric’s Guitar Zen! That is one very valuable pack of resources and development.
