On Location: Harmonic Riffs

About this course

Riffs don’t have to live in a single-note box. By layering harmonic intervals, moveable shapes, and rhythmic ideas, you can turn simple lines into riffs that feel fuller, more expressive, and musically alive.

In On Location: Harmonic Riffs, Andrea Quartarone explores how to build compelling riffs by blending single-note rhythms with harmonic intervals, triads, and creative chord concepts. Filmed on location in Italy, this course shows you how to move beyond predictable patterns and craft riffs that evolve with the harmony.

“Riffs are more than just single-note lines. By adding harmonic ideas, you can create parts with more depth, color, and motion. These concepts will help you break out of repetitive habits and write riffs that really connect,” says Andrea.

You’ll explore:

  • Single-note rhythmic ideas to establish groove and momentum
  • Harmonic intervals over diatonic progressions using thirds, fourths, sixths, and octaves
  • Moveable triads and triadic motifs for melodic, connected riffing
  • Rock riff construction using pentatonic, blues, Dorian, and Aeolian sounds
  • Creative sus chord applications for fresh harmonic color
  • Smart, moveable power chords that adapt across progressions
  • Performance studies and playalong exercises to apply every concept musically
With TrueFire’s powerful learning tools—including synced tab, slow-motion, looping, and fretboard animations—you can work through each idea at your own pace and immediately put it into practice.

So grab your guitar and let’s dig in with Andrea Quartarone!

ON LOCATION: Harmonic Riffs
Hi, I’m Andrea Quartarone. Riffs are more than just single-note lines. By adding harmonic ideas, we can create parts that bring more depth, color, and movement to our playing. In On Location: Harmonic Riffs, we’ll explore how to craft interesting riffs using a mix of single-note rhythmic ideas, harmonic intervals, and moveable triads.
How to Work with This Course
In this lesson we will learn how to get the best results from the course by focusing on four things: technique, harmonic awareness, sound development, and timing. We’ll also aim to transpose ideas into new keys and experiment with our own tone so everything becomes usable in real-world playing.
Single-Note Rhythmic Ideas
In this lesson we will learn how to create strong riff foundations using single-note rhythms, tight picking choices, and clean timing. We’ll focus on downstrokes vs. alternate picking patterns, using a metronome, and understanding how one note can “change meaning” over different chords.
EX. A1
In this lesson we will learn by playing along with a single-note rhythmic riff that connects pentatonic positions and uses palm muting and ghost notes for groove and attitude.
EX. A1
In this lesson we will be breaking down how the riff works with palm muting, ghost notes, and position shifts, plus how the note choices relate to the underlying harmony.
EX. A2
In this lesson we will learn a variation on the previous idea, using the same scale concept but starting from a different spot to create a new rhythmic feel and flow.
EX. A2
In this lesson we will be breaking down how the new starting point changes the phrasing, and how we keep the groove consistent with muting and articulation.

Another great course by Andrea Quartarone.

I’ve purchased all of Andrea’s courses, and I have to say he always covers topics that are unique and that I haven’t found in other courses. In particular, in this course his approach to melodic double-stops is truly practical and something I haven’t seen elsewhere. His Italian accent also makes him even more likeable. Definitely a course I would highly recommend!
