Rev. Robert Jones, Sr. is a native Detroiter and an inspirational storyteller and musician celebrating the history, humor, and power of American Roots music. His deep love for traditional African American and American traditional music is shared in live performances that interweave timeless stories with original and traditional songs.
For more than thirty years Robert has entertained and educated audiences of all ages in schools, colleges, libraries, union halls, prisons, churches, and civil rights organizations. At the heart of his message is the belief that our cultural diversity tells a story that should celebrate, not just tolerate.
Acclaimed photographer James Fraher writes about Robert: “Perhaps the world’s most highly educated blues musician, an ordained minister, a longtime DJ, and a living encyclopedia of blues history, the Reverend Robert Jones is comfortable among juke joint loud talkers, fancy-hatted church ladies, and PhDs alike."
Great, clear, and grounded in knowledge and context. If a bit high-tempo.
The reverend's lessons are some of the best I've found on the internet, the only annoyance I have is that he often plays like he has somewhere to be. Often in near double tempo compared to the original he's teaching. Which would be less of a deal if slowing the videos didn't mess with the audio quality so much. If truefire had a better audio compression system, this would be absolute gold.

A True American Blues Griot!
In West Africa, there are a class of elders who maintain oral history passed down through the generations via the arts (poetry, music, spoken word). These people are referred to as "Griots". Reverend Robert Jones is every bit of an American Griot as there comes! His preservation of not only the historical people, places and events surrounding blues music, but also the various playing styles of the forefathers (and mothers) of blues, jazz, and rock music is always a privilege to witness! Whether its 6-string, 12-string, a resonator or a banjo, Reverend Jones will play with pride, all while giving historical insight to beginners and advanced learners alike! What a gem!

One of a Kind
Rev. Jones has proven himself to be not just a great player, but a great instructor and storyteller. He has an understanding of the blues to really express its spirituality and expression. Given his knowledge of blues history, He is a prime example of how knowing the history of the music you're playing improves your style.
