Hi, I'm Teymur Phell and welcome to my new TrueFire course, 30 Groove Master Bass Lines You Must Know.
I strongly believe that if you follow my instructions and put in some solid practice time, this course will take you to the next level in terms of groove, harmonic awareness, and playing bass lines in various styles.
From funk and R&B to jazz and Cuban grooves, we'll learn to apply several different harmonic progressions that I've selected or you, as well as some technical and stylistic ideas.
I hope you'll enjoy the music we'll cover, and that this course will make you a better musician once you've grasped all of the ideas and approaches. So grab your bass, and let's get to work!
In this video, we'll break down the chord progression to a 12 bar blues in the key of F and learn to play the chords on the bass note by note. This step is very important, as we'll base all of our bass lines in this section on these chord changes.
This first funk groove is a great example of a solid mid-tempo feel, where the bass line and the drum part stick tightly together to create a very satisfying and fat groove to support the rest of the band. It's very important to use a metronome on a slower tempo when practicing.
This is another variation of a funk groove, now with a more eighth note oriented feel which makes it a little lighter. However, the bass and drums still stick together to create a tight sound.
Make sure to listen to the drum part careful when you practice this groove and be aware of how you sound with the track; in other words, always be listening!
This shuffle has a great, straight forward groove somewhere between a walking bass and a funk feel. It's written in straight eighth notes, but played with a triplet feel.
This kind of groove works great over the blues, allowing you to go through the changes in a relatively simple but solid way—we don’t add fills; just driving the band with a nice, firm, confident groove.
When playing reggae, it’s very important have a laid back kind of feel, never pushing the tempo, always staying in that zone. When playing any of the triplet quarter notes, make sure they’re equal in time. You can also play this groove with a muted thumb technique that we'll discuss later on in the course.
In this video, we'll start talking about jazz playing, specifically with a half time feel. It's crucial to play out each note to the fullest—if the note is written as a half note, play it fully before moving on. Make sure not to cut it short just because you have to move on the next note!
