Banjo for Guitar Players

About this course

You play guitar. You dig old time music, bluegrass, folk and the blues. You love to hangout with your buds and jam. Naturally, you’ve always been drawn to the inimitable sound of the banjo because the music that you love to play and listen to just doesn't sound right without it.

Deep down inside, you’ve always wanted to learn how to play one but there’s too big of a learning curve and you just don’t have not enough time to do it right. Right? Wrong!

You are literally just hours away from playing your first tune on the banjo in either bluegrass or clawhammer style. How is that possible? Because you already have almost all of the requisite skills. No kidding.

You already play guitar which makes learning how to play the banjo a snap. You already understand the concept of tuning strings, fingering notes and chords, picking and strumming. That’s 75% of the work! Cathy Fink will take you the rest of the way. And take you there in a flash.

We’ve wanted to do this course for a long time but we needed the perfect educator to make it happen. There’s no one on the planet better qualified than Cathy to kickstart your banjo chops.

Sure Cathy can play like nobody’s business. Her Grammy-winning pedigree speaks for itself. But Cathy’s educational chops shine just as bright. Her platinum-selling Clawhammer Banjo series here at TrueFire, and the tons of kudos from students, are ample testament to Cathy’s teaching prowess.

Cathy’s Banjo for Guitar Players is NOT a beginners banjo course — its an accelerated learning program designed solely for guitar players with one end in mind — to get you up and running on banjo as quickly as possible. She accomplishes this by skipping over all of the rudimentary material that a flat-out beginner would require.

“While this may be the first time you attempt to learn how to play banjo, this course is NOT a beginner's course. I’ll show you how to take the skills you already have on guitar and transfer them to the banjo — you’ll be playing your first banjo tune way faster than you would ever imagine. You’ll be learning two very popular styles of banjo, bluegrass and clawhammer but you’ll be able to use the skills that you learn in this course in a variety of musical styles spanning bluegrass, blues, folk, old time music and much more.”

Cathy organized the course into 3 sections. In the first section, you’ll dig right in with a banjo primer covering: Old Time & Bluegrass Banjo, Holding The Banjo & G Tuning, Open Chords: G, C, D7, Am & Em, Closed Position Chords, Two Finger Picking and Using A Capo.

In the second section, you’ll learn essential banjo techniques: Bluegrass Style Primer, Alternating Roll & Pinch, Forward Roll & Variation, Backward Roll, Forward/Backward Roll, Mixed Roll, Roll Practice, Three Finger Lick Vocabulary, Intro Licks, Pinch & Slide Lick, The Holding Pattern Lick, Classic Fill Lick, Ending Licks, Playing Backup, Rhythm Chops, Rolls, Clawhammer Right Hand from basics on up.

You’ll put it all to work in the third section where you’ll start building your repertoire. Cathy demonstrates and then breaks down four classic banjo tunes, in both Bluegrass and Clawhammer style: Cripple Creek, Old Joe Clark, Shady Grove and Rollin' In My Sweet Baby's Arms.

All the key examples are tabbed and notated, plus you’ll get all the rhythm tracks to work with on your own. Cathy has included rhythm tracks with guitar and vocals, as well as tracks without the vocals so that you can sing along yourself if desired.

Grab that banjo, click now and start the countdown clock… you’ll be playing your first tune in a matter of hours!

Banjo for Guitar Players
Welcome to Banjo for Guitar Players. This course is for the guitar player who either wants to explore an authentic traditional banjo sound, or simply wants to take their guitar knowledge and apply it to the banjo for a banjo flavored sound. We'll explore five string banjo styles, six string and four string banjos.
SECTION 1: Banjo Primer
Time to get familiar with the banjo, how to hold it, tune it and what's different about banjo from guitar.
Old Time & Bluegrass Banjo
Here is a short intro to the different styles and banjos - old time fingerpicking, bluegrass fingerpicking, claw hammer, hybrid styles and hybrid banjos.
Holding The Banjo & G tuning
Look at positions for holding the banjo, and using a strap to keep it in place. Tuning #1 is G tuning. From high 5th string to the 1st string, closest to the floor, the tuning is GDGBD.
Open Chords: G, C, D7, Am & Em
These are your basic 1st position chords. They will use open strings and typically be played on the first few frets.
Closed Position Chords
Closed position chords are used frequently in bluegrass and occasionally in old-time music. They give you full access to the banjo fingerboard. It is a good idea to learn each chord in each of its positions up the neck.
Two Finger Picking
You can play a lot of songs and tunes with a simple thumb and index finger style of fingepicking. Sometimes the starkness of this style really suits a song. It will also help you make a quick transfer of guitar skills to banjo.

This is a great course . I love her enthusiasm and teaching techniques. Go slow and practice over and over is the way. Speed comes eventually but only when you slow it down and do it in chunks. Cathy gives you everything you need.

Smooth Transition

What a great way to introduce guitar players to banjo. Cathy Fink's course is excellent. Taking the knowledge the guitar player has and presenting it for use on the banjo and with a wide selection of technique specific to banjo. This makes the transition smooth and is a great introduction to the unique world of banjo. Thanks
