Guitar Lab: Harnessing Slurs

About this course

A common occurence when utilizing slurs on the guitar is an inaccuracy of rhythm. This course is designed to assist players at all levels in the application of hammer-ons, pull-offs, and legato slides. You will study the principles of rhythm through playing riffs over various jam tracks. We will start with understanding how to count the rhythm of a riff and then we will generate ideas by using the concept of rhythmic displacement. You will receive chord/scale theory which will assist you in creating strong melodic ideas. This theory will include arpeggios, pentatonic scales, and modes. The options of alternate picking vs. consecutive down or up strokes will be presented to aid in equipping you for any groove at any tempo.

What you'll learn

  • Play on the 'ands' of beats for rhythmic punch without busyness
  • Hear practical application of slurs, rhythmic placement, and space in a real solo context

Understanding Rhythm
This lesson establishes the rhythmic foundation of any groove. You will learn to "think drums" on the guitar.
Understanding Rhythm
The next level of rhythmic subdivision is the eighth note. This lesson will teach you to hear eighth notes inside a quarter note tempo.
Understanding Rhythm
Sixteenth notes are twice as fast as eighth notes so you have to have some counting chops as well as playing chops to execute these precisely. You will also develop a default picking scheme which will serve you at faster tempos.
Chord / Scale Theory
This lesson prepares you for soloing over the tune "Still There" by examining the arpeggios for the four different chords in this progression.
Chord / Scale Theory
I will show you two pentatonic scale approaches for this track which will give you melodic options both for soloing and rhythm guitar parts.
Chord / Scale Theory
This progression is a I V vi IV in the key of C major. The modes are Ionian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Lydian.

Not typical legato workout

As always, Brad Carlton takes teaching basic concepts and techniques to the next level where everything is connected. Here he not only teaches how to approach learning hammer-ons and pull-offs, he also shows how to apply them to the scales and real life playing with rhythm and melody.

Much more than slurs

What I really like with Brad Carlton is that he does what he can to always give you more than expected. In this course about slurs (hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides) you learn and practise all these but also learn about pentatonics, harmony, rhythm... Highly recommended.
