The Swing Feel
Lesson Source: Sheryl Bailey's Bebop Dojo: Essentials

Duke Ellington said it all with the title of his tune: "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing." Developing a strong swing feel is crucial to speaking the language of jazz fluently. Without swing, it's just a bunch of notes. This is a discussion on my ideas about what really swings. Swing is a living entity and has a forward moving pulse. Being able to place the accents in different places in the beat is what gives swing life. Practice improvising on a 2nd line rhythmic grooves to learn to feel where the various accents sit. Listening to the greats and transcribing are perfect avenues for deepening your swing feel.

Here I demonstrate the difference in feels. It's hard for me not to swing, but I tried my best for you, just so you can hear and feel the difference. Everyone swings in their own unique way, but swing we must!

Imitating a player and playing along is the best way to internalize their feel, so here's an opportunity to play along.
Buckysuckle Flow
Lesson Source: Tom Dempsey's 50 Jazz Masters

As a fixture in the jazz and studio scene in New York during the 1950s Bucky Pizzarelli has performed and recorded with an impressive list of people including Benny Goodman, Zoot Simms, Stephane Grappelli and Slam Stewart. He's also known for playing the 7 string guitar to get luscious sounding chords and accompaniment. This example is a chord solo in his style but played on the 6 string guitar. Let's take a listen to this.
Funky Flourish
Lesson Source: Frank Vignola's Jazz Up Your Blues

You're jamming along playing your bluesy licks and want to add a little something to spice things up. Try adding a "flourish". A flourish is a fast musical idea that leads to a new chord change or new melodic idea. This tune has some great flourish ideas but don't stop there! As long as you have a starting and an end note you can develop your own flourishes. Don't forget to keep the expression in your playing.

Again we start by going over the chords. An important step every time. You must know the chords. We start with the sharp 9 and go down the pentatonic scale. Then we add the flourish. Practice this flourish idea slowly. Don't forget we have our target ending tone. Then a pull off. Pull offs are a great way to spice up your solos. On the E7 chord we use neighboring tones playing a note above and below the chord tones before playing the chord tone. Great Joe Pass style lick. Pentatonic is used over the Am7-D7 chords. Creates great tension before ending on the G chord.

Review request emails need work

Good information but I need to go a few steps back to something a little more beginner. The link in your emails for submitting reviews does not work. I will most likely not go to this extent for leaving a review in the future.

Good overview of the Jazz Content

This course provides a good overview over the different educators and subjects covered under the Jazz umbrella on truefire. As a consequence it is not a very targeted course that goes in depths on a particular subject.
