Jazz Combustion

About this course

Jazz guitar is a cruel mistress. After spending years learning and adding all of the genre's theories and techniques to your arsenal, you're still left with the challenge of putting it all together into a cohesive statement when it's time to step up and solo or comp behind a vocalist or soloist. Jazz Combustion offers up a fresh and insightful approach for comping and improvising innovative solos.

By using real world examples, Jazz Combustion breaks down higher improvisational concepts such as chord voice selection, chordal movement, target tones, chord substitution, motifs, pacing, scat vocal techniques and outside playing, all while retaining the vibe of the prevailing tune's melody and harmonic structure.

Swedish jazz guitar phenom Andreas Oberg shows you how to effectively tie these and other key concepts into your playing while guiding you to develop your own voice. Oberg has performed with and earned the accolades of such guitar luminaries as Les Paul, Toots Thielemans, Bireli Lagrene, Larry Coryell and Frank Vignola and many others.

"The goal of this course is to illustrate the way that I look at jazz improvisation and comping. I have selected five different chord progressions and styles that are very common within the jazz repertoire (fast bebop, jazz blues, funk, ballad and jazz waltz). I'll first perform over that progression and then break it down for you, revealing the ideas and concepts behind the performance."

Andreas has showcased his unique ability to go from cool, smooth phrases to an incendiary barrage of well chosen notes and back again through countless TV and radio appearances as well as regular features in international guitar publications. Andreas also demonstrates his unique talent for presenting techniques and concepts, often considered daunting, in a laid-back, easy-to-comprehend manner.

Using familiar progressions as a foundation, Jazz Combustion takes the viewer through such higher rhythmic concepts of jazz improvisation as selecting of appropriate chord voicings when comping; using chromatic, ascending and descending chordal movement to direct the tune's feel; and choosing chord voicings that share common target tones to lend cohesiveness to complex progressions.

Jazz Combustion also delves into such advanced soloing techniques as incorporating rhythmic and melodic motifs as a foundation for improvisation, the use of pacing to give your solos an evocative edge, singing along with your improvisations to encourage thoughtful note choices as well as the effective use of chromatic passing tones to link complex harmonic ideas smoothly. Even while incorporating these higher improvisational concepts, the focus of Jazz Combustion remains on the tune, with Andreas showing us how the right note selection can retain the progression's outline during even the most outside solo excursions.

Jazz Combustion is an indispensable resource for taking your improvisational skills to the next level, not only for jazz guitarists, but guitarists from any discipline where improvisation is the name of the game.

Jazz Combustion
Swedish guitar phenom Andreas Oberg has performed with and earned the accolades of such guitar luminaries as Les Paul, Toots Thielemans, Bireli Lagrene, Larry Coryell and Frank Vignola. Along with regular TV and radio appearances, Andreas is often featured in international guitar publications.

In his first TrueFire course, Andreas guides us through his approach to solos, chord substitutions and scat vocal techniques along with his fresh melodic and rhythmic ideas which should prove useful not only for jazz guitar buffs but fans of any improvisational style, such as blues, rock, soul, R&B and pop. Andreas demonstrates these techniques via his renditions of the jazz standards Cherokee, Bluesette, Sonny, Body and Soul and his own 12-bar Blues in F.

Live Performance 1
Andreas gives a 6:25 minute long clinic on improvisation during a burning rendition of “Cherokee” from Muriel Anderson’s 2008 All Star Guitar Night, featuring Stu Hamm on bass on Danny Gottlieb on drums. Notice that no matter how quickly things get going or how outside the note choice veers, the melody and changes are always close by. Enjoy!
Fast Bebop Comping
Written by British bandleader Ray Noble, “Cherokee” wasn’t a hit until Charlie Barnet’s instrumental recording hit number 15 on the pop charts. Even so, it wasn’t considered an improvisational standard until Charlie Parker took the tune under his wing in the early forties.

Andreas performs the progression of “Cherokee” in this video which features a 64-bar progression consisting of a 16-bar A part which is then repeated, followed by a 16-bar B part. The tune finishes with a return to the A part, bringing us back to the beginning of the progression.

Fast Bebop Comping
This tune is in Bb and begins with an A section consisting of the following chords: Bbmaj7, Fm7, B7, Ebmaj7, Ab7, Gm7, C7, Cm7, G7, Cm7 and F7. This A section is repeated, with Cm7, F7 and Bbmaj7 to end the section the second time.

The B section, or bridge, begins with a ii-V-I move in B major: C#min7, F#7 and Bmaj7 followed by the same progression in A major: Bm7, E7 and Amaj7. The progression then moves to G major – Am7, D7 and Gmaj7, followed by two quick ii-V moves: Gm7 to C7 and Cm7 to F7.

Fast Bebop Comping
In this section Andreas explains how the band arrangement affects his choice of chord voicings. Here he chooses to rely on the higher strings to leave room for the bassist while still delivering an economical and interesting foundation for the soloist. He also explains the chord’s relationships to both one another and the key center.
Fast Bebop Comping
Here Andreas experiments with ascending chordal movement to add interest and differentiate the second pass through the A section from the first. In the bridge section, he ties the chords together by keeping the same note on top for each pair of chords, adding cohesiveness to the progression as well as demonstrating how the technique can mirror the intensity of the soloist.
Fast Bebop Comping
Andreas walks through some useful comping devices in this section, starting off with some short, sweet syncopated chord jabs before moving into more straight-ahead comping before going out again, approaching the chord’s timing much like a jazz drummer approaches the snare. He also demonstrates the effectiveness of half-step chromatic slides before briefly moving on to tritone substitution and a chromatic approach to the entire progression down the neck.

Jazz Combustion by Andreas Oberg

For a long time I did not pay attention to Andreas Oberg. I found this video by chance while browsing around on TrueFire, and like many others I bought it out of curiosity. The learning material is well prepared and very inspiring. Andreas Oberg is worth listening to!
