50 Pro Bass Grooves You MUST Know

About this course

Ask any top pro bass player and they’ll tell you that having command of a wide variety of bass lines and grooves is an absolute MUST if you want to gig on a regular basis. You might be able to tap, pop, slap or solo like a virtuoso BUT if you can’t lay down the right groove for the band, on a moment’s notice, then you’re left with only two choices:

OPTION #1: Sell your fancy phone (you won’t be getting many gig calls) and invest in a suit and tie for an office job.

OPTION #2: Lock yourself in the shed and dig deep into Stu Hamm’s 50 Pro Bass Grooves You MUST Know (keep the phone ‘cause it will be ringing off the hook!).

“No one can be a master of all musical styles, but if you have a basic understanding of the fundamental grooves found across a variety of popular musical genres, it will greatly help you get gigs and sustain a career. There are plenty of great bass players who work all the time because they just show up, play the right part and get called back. I’ve pulled together 50 essential bass lines and grooves, across a wide musical landscape, that will prepare you with the musical diversity you’ll need as a working bassist.”

Indeed, Stu delivers grooves and lines across a very wide musical landscape; from mainstream Blues, Rock, Metal and Funk to Latin-Pop, South African, Ska, Caribbean and New Orleans to Motown, Funk, Soul and Gospel and even four walking bass lines for jazz. Stu also demonstrates several grooves in the odd time signatures that you’re likely to encounter on the bandstand. It’s all here.
"WOW! This one seems to touch a bit on virtually every genre! Excellent coverage of bass lines I would never have had come to mind if not for seeing some of this work!" - Ron H., TrueFire Student
Stu not only demonstrates the grooves over a rhythm track, he breaks it all down with special emphasis on the correct right and left-hand techniques you need to develop to pull the groove off just like the pros.

Speaking of rhythm tracks and pros, you’ll be treated to 50 tracks recorded in the studio just for this course with two of the very best session players in the biz; Bernie Dresel on drums and Carl Verheyen on guitar.

Everything is tabbed and notated, plus you’ll get all of the rhythm tracks to work with on your own.

BASSIST WANTED: Must be able to play Rock, Soul, Blues, Reggae, some Jazz and Odd Meters. Auditions by appointment only.

Put in the time with Stu’s 50 Pro Bass Grooves and the next time you see a classified like this — pick up that fancy phone and call for a slot!

50 Pro Bass Grooves
Welcome to 50 Pro Bass Grooves You MUST Know Stu Hamm Style! No one can be a master of all musical styles, but if you have a basic understanding of the fundamental grooves in different musical genres, it will greatly help you get gigs and sustain a career. While some may think of tapping and slapping and solo bass playing when my name comes up, I actually come from a pretty straight ahead musical background and learned to play bass playing upright in my middle school stage band. I then started playing in rock bands and doing jazz cafe gigs, wedding gigs, cruise ships, top 40, you name it, I must have played at some time in my life! There are plenty of great bass players who work all the time that you might have heard of, because they just show up, play the right part and get called back. In this course I have attempted to put together 50 licks across a wide musical landscape that will prepare you to have the muscial diversity you will need as a working bassist. I hope that some of these grooves will expose you to types of musc that you may not have been aware of, and that they inspire you to dig deeper into the styles that interest you. Good luck!
Starting Point
This seemingly simple groove leaves no room for any errors. With Bernie laying it down by playing "Four on the Floor" (every quarter note on the bass drum), it will really stand out if you are before or behind the beat. Make sure that every note has the same duration and tone. It is simplicity and confidence that will make this groove happen.
Trip Six
Here is the first example of how slightly changing the bass line can completely change the feel and vibe of the groove. We're going to use the same rhythm track by Bernie and Carl from Groove #1 but spice up the bass line a bit by adding and implying a triplet or swing feel and adding the major 6th to alter the groove harmonically.
The Seventh Walk
Here in Groove #3 we are once again going to use the same rhythm tracks that we have used for the last two grooves and once again, completely change the feel of the groove by slightly altering the bass line. Here, we are going to head in the direction on a true walking bass line by using ascending and descending chord tones to create a smoother and less jagged line.
NOLA
Here is a blues with a little more grease on it. Carl and Bernie are the perfect pair to lay down this groove, and I think that you will particularly enjoy playing along with Bernie's authentic second line groove. You'll notice that this blues is stripped down harmonically, not going to the 4 chord in the second bar and hanging on the 5 for the turnaround. You really need to put the feel in your back pocket, and the further back in the beat you can play without actually slowing down or bogging the feel, the funkier it will sound.
Take 2
Here is the first of 4 bass lines over the same groove to show you different ways to approach constructing and playing a walking jazz bass line. The first thing that you will notice is that we have spiced things up a bit harmonically by adding a 1-6-2-5 turnaround so often used in this style of music. The first groove is what is referred to as a 2 feel and is usually used in the front and back end of a swing tune, often when accompanying a singer. You will essentially be playing half-time, while implying the swinging eighth notes to come to set up the main groove of the song.
Take A Walk
In our second jazz groove, we are going to construct a bass line using only notes that are the scales of each chord, and attempt to connect them in a linear fashion to give the line a nice, even shape. After you play beat 2, you want to start thinking about what is the best way to get to the root of the next chord by playing a note that is close to it or has a strong resolution, like from a 5th above. You need to be right on the beat here, neither pushing the beat or puling it back, but locking right in with the drummer.
