Jump Start Rock Guitar

About this course

Most beginners believe that they need to know how to read music, understand theory, struggle through boring exercises and learn hundreds of chords to play rock guitar. NOT SO!

Guitar is the most popular instrument on the planet because it's the easiest instrument to learn how to play. And rock guitar is one of the easiest style of music to play - thousands of popular rock songs can be played with just a few strumming patterns and a cool riff or two.

Learn those few chords, strums and riffs, along with the basics of holding and tuning a guitar, and you too will be able to play hundreds of your favorite rock songs. And that's what Jeff Scheetz’s Jump Start Rock Guitar is all about–a quick, easy, fun and interactive approach for learning how to play rock guitar.

Jump Start Rock starts you off with a series of video lessons showing you how to tune up, hold the pick and position your hands. In your very first practice session, you'll learn your first rock riff and immediately start jamming along with the instructor in a playalong lesson with a practice rhythm track.

Over the next series of lessons, you'll continue to learn new riffs and practice them in more playalongs with rhythm tracks. Next up, you'll learn rock's most useful chord–the "power chord" and how to play it all over the fretboard. Then you'll get a grip on the five most useful chords in popular rock music; the E, A, D, C and G chords.

Finally, you'll learn the blues-rock scale that everyone uses to solo and improvise with (and we mean EVERYONE from Hendrix to Van Halen to Stevie Ray Vaughn!).

Powered by TrueFire, you’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar, dig in on these lessons and you'll know just enough to be dangerous–and that's a good thing!

What you'll learn

  • Execute chord changes on upbeats
  • Use right-hand muting to stop strings completely
  • Switch between chords quickly enough for rock tempo
  • Understand which strings to strum for each chord
  • Maintain proper fingertip positioning to avoid muting open strings

Jump-Start Rock Guitar
Welcome to Jump Start Rock Guitar! This course is all about grabbing your guitar and starting to play!! While learning complete theory and all the ins and outs of guitar playing is something you should shoot for…. We don't want to get bogged down in that now - we just wanna jam!!! So - let's get started. Remember, this course is set up with these 4 easy steps on each lesson to get you rockin' out in no time. 1.) I will play the riff for you. - 2.) I will teach you how to play it. - 3.) We will play it together with the band jam track. - 4.) You keep practicing it with the jam track on your own.
Tuning Your Guitar
Elephants And Dogs Got Big Ears. Those are the names of your strinjgs - from the 6th one (the thickest, fattest string) to the 1st one (the skinny one). And now you know your string numbers as well! :o)
Parts of a Guitar
Knowing the names of the parts of the guitar is important. That will help you when you have to tell someone about something going on with your guitar, or if you are reading about a guitar thing - then you will know what they are talking about! Go over the parts everytime you pick your guitar up - just look at the part and say the name, and in no time you will have it down!
Let's Jam!
This one is easy to get started on! All you need is a guitar with one string! Seriously, just try to play this riff with a very steady beat, keeping your pick strokes even. Don't have too much pick sticking out - sort of "choke up" on the pick and keep in under control. Also - try using a heavy pick - if your pick is too thin it will bend too much. And above all - work on tapping your foot when you play - and when you just listen to music- get to where you can't NOT tap your foot when music is on!
Jam Play-along
Pick up your guitar and play along with Jeff.
Start Moving
When you are fretting notes be sure to be really close to the fret wire that is closest to the bridge of your guitar. That will give you the best and purest sound. Press down just hard enough to get the string to ring out - don't squeeze it too hard - finesse!!! Your fingers will get used to fretting notes - don't get discouraged!!!!! You are asking your fingers and hands to do something that they have not done before - so it will take a little time to get comfortable with it.

If you are just starting to learn guitar you are probably overwhelmed with all the info out there. You might be like me...I tried several different online avenues and got burned by lessons that were too complicated or just plain wrong with regard to what a beginner needs to be doing. If that's you, don't be afraid to pull the trigger on this course. It is exactly what you need to get started. And once you improve you will still be coming back to these lessons to stay sharp. The songs are easy to learn and fun to play. This is definitely worth the $!

Having previously purchased and enjoyed Richard Gilewitz's "Jumpstart Finger-style Guitar", it seemed a natural progression to look for another Truefire Jumpstart course when, like Bob Dylan, I finally made the move to electric guitar. Jeff Scheetz's "Jumpstart Rock Guitar" is the perfect way to begin your electric guitar journey. You start playing music pretty much straight away, something we all want to do as soon as possible after picking up our guitar. Jeff is instructive, friendly and encouraging throughout the whole lesson series, leaving you with a solid grounding in the electric guitar (with a bit of acoustic thrown in for good measure). Some lessons will take some practice for the beginner, but nothing is too hard to achieve with a little effort. A great introduction to the electric guitar - it's got me hooked already!
