About this course
If you're ready to get more color, spice, and harmonic depth out of the pentatonic shapes you already know, Jon Finn’s online video guitar lessons in this pentatonic-focused course are exactly where you need to be.
"Most guitar players already know their major and minor pentatonic shapes. The issue isn’t knowledge, it’s application."
This step-by-step guitar course takes a systematic approach to unlocking richer sounds from familiar pentatonic patterns. Instead of memorizing brand-new scale systems, you’ll learn how to reposition and reinterpret the major and minor pentatonic shapes you already play so they create more sophisticated melodic and harmonic meaning.
You’ll start by applying major and minor pentatonic shapes over major and minor chords, learning how building from different scale degrees within the parent key changes the color and implied harmony. From there, Jon expands the concept into dominant chord applications, showing you how small alterations — like adding a raised third, flat five, minor sixth, or flat one — can open the door to deeper modal tension and more expressive soloing options.
You’ll bring these concepts into real-world musical situations, applying them across chord progressions in multiple keys. Each lesson is paired with purpose-built backing tracks so you can hear, feel, and internalize every sound in context.
Practice and play with your instructor through the entire course at your own pace using TrueFire's intuitive playalongs, backing tracks, and learning tools. All of the demonstrations are tabbed, notated, and synced to the video, with controls for looping, slow motion, and fretboard animation.
This isn’t about memorizing new patterns. It’s about unlocking new meaning from the ones you already know.

Hi, I’m Jon Finn. Most guitar players already know their major and minor pentatonic shapes, but the issue isn’t knowledge. It’s application.
In this course, we’ll take a systematic approach to getting more color, more spice, and more modal flavor from the pentatonics you already play. Instead of learning entirely new scale systems, you’ll discover how to reposition and reinterpret familiar shapes to create richer harmonic meaning.
We’ll begin by applying major and minor pentatonic shapes strategically over major and minor chords. From there, we’ll expand into dominant seventh chord applications. By altering the core minor pentatonic shape with tones like the natural third, flat five, sixth, and flat one, you’ll gain access to deeper modal tension and more expressive harmonic options.
In the final section, we’ll bring everything into real-world musical situations so these concepts can become fluid and intuitive in songs and jams. Every lesson includes purpose-built backing tracks to help you internalize each sound in context. With TrueFire’s interactive learning tools, you can also isolate each concept and study how it functions across the neck.
This isn’t about memorizing new patterns. It’s about unlocking new meanings from the shapes you already know.
So grab your guitar, and let’s get started.

In this opening lesson, I’ll share how I found my way back to the pentatonic scales that first made the guitar feel like home. We’ll look at how simple, familiar shapes can create sophisticated sounds without making your playing feel overly intellectual.
In this section, we’ll explore several ways to use major pentatonic scales over major chords. Instead of always starting from the root, we’ll use different scale relationships to create sounds that are more open, colorful, and melodic.
In this lesson, we’ll establish the basic C major pentatonic sound and apply it over a C major chord. We’ll also look at why starting in the middle of the guitar can give your phrases more room to move.
Here, we’ll take the same root-based major pentatonic idea and move it into B♭. This is a good opportunity to see how easily the shape can be transferred into another key.
In this lesson, we’ll move our root-based major pentatonic lick into the key of D. The goal is to become comfortable taking one musical idea and moving it freely around the neck.
In this lesson, we’ll add a little spice by playing G major pentatonic over a C major chord. Avoiding the root creates a floating quality where the notes always seem to want to keep moving.
