Penatonic Pathways
In this opening lesson, I’ll share how I found my way back to the pentatonic scales that first made the guitar feel like home. We’ll look at how simple, familiar shapes can create sophisticated sounds without making your playing feel overly intellectual.
Major Pentatonic
In this section, we’ll explore several ways to use major pentatonic scales over major chords. Instead of always starting from the root, we’ll use different scale relationships to create sounds that are more open, colorful, and melodic.
Major Pentatonic Root
In this lesson, we’ll establish the basic C major pentatonic sound and apply it over a C major chord. We’ll also look at why starting in the middle of the guitar can give your phrases more room to move.
Major Pentatonic Root
Here, we’ll take the same root-based major pentatonic idea and move it into B♭. This is a good opportunity to see how easily the shape can be transferred into another key.
Major Pentatonic Root
In this lesson, we’ll move our root-based major pentatonic lick into the key of D. The goal is to become comfortable taking one musical idea and moving it freely around the neck.
Major Pentatonic (5th)
In this lesson, we’ll add a little spice by playing G major pentatonic over a C major chord. Avoiding the root creates a floating quality where the notes always seem to want to keep moving.
