Bass for Guitar Players

About this course

Alex Scott’s Bass for Guitar Players is the ultimate quick-start course designed specifically for guitarists who want to unlock the world of bass. If you already play guitar, you’re closer than you think to becoming a confident, gig-ready bassist. This course is your fast track to building groove, tightening your timing, and gaining a deeper understanding of the harmonic engine behind the music you already love to play.

Alex Scott takes a hands-on, practical approach to helping guitar players make a smooth and musical transition to the bass. You’ll start by exploring how your existing knowledge—scales, shapes, arpeggios, and fretboard familiarity—translates to the four-string format. You’ll then dig into tone, touch, and timing to develop the right feel and presence needed to lock in with any drummer. From fingerstyle technique and muting to tone shaping and real-world rhythm patterns, you’ll be developing the core skills that make bass players indispensable.

The course is structured in three progressive sections. First, you’ll get comfortable with bass mechanics by translating what you already know on guitar. Next, you'll build essential technique through focused fretboard workouts and musical patterns. Finally, you’ll apply everything you've learned through a series of groove studies in a variety of popular genres. Each section is packed with demonstrations, playalong sessions, and full performances, giving you the opportunity to internalize everything in a real musical context.

Alex guides you through classic and modern styles—from rock and blues to country, funk, and R&B—helping you not just play the right notes, but also feel them. You’ll learn how to play melodic fills, construct powerful basslines, and support a band with confidence, taste, and precision.

With TrueFire’s interactive learning tools, including synced tab, slow-mo, looping, and fretboard animations, you’ll have everything you need to make steady progress. You’ll also get access to Alex’s custom backing tracks so you can lock in and jam like you're already part of the band.

Whether you’re looking to sit in with friends, land a bass gig, or just expand your musical perspective, this course will transform the way you think about your instrument. Grab your bass, plug in, and groove your way into a whole new level of musicianship with Alex Scott’s Bass for Guitar Players.

Bass for Guitar Players
Hey, Alex Scott here. Welcome to Bass for Guitar Players. Now, there's a long list of reasons why guitar players should learn how to play bass. Your ability to lock into the groove is significantly enhanced. Understanding the bass player's harmonic and rhythmic role will greatly improve how you craft your guitar parts, and frankly, playing both just leads to more work and more musical opportunities.

Now, I've organized this course into three sections. In the first, we'll learn how to translate what you already know on the guitar onto the bass. In our second section, I'll guide you through workouts to expand your understanding of the bass fretboard and its role in a musical context. And finally, we'll work through stylized bass studies to help you speak the language of low end across six genres you're most likely to encounter on your bass journey.

Plus, there's tab sync and notation along with slow-mo controls, looping, and fretboard animations to help you learn at your own pace. Ready to make the jump to bass? Let's dig in.

Really enjoyed this

As a guitar player, this helped me translate my knowledge in a clear and easy to digest way. You walk away with something from every lesson. I've messed around with bass for years and I never thought I'd play fingerstyle. But here I am becoming more comfortable with it every day now! Makes the instrument so much more fun. Thanks for this course!

Great course

I actually started switching between bass and guitar a while ago, but like all of Alex's courses this one is full of insights and fun applications. So whether you're just starting out on bass or you're already down that road, I can highly recommend this course. Alex not only knows all the ins and outs of the instrument, he is also a great teacher with a great personality!
