Devil Inside by INXS
Hey everyone, Irene Ketikidi here! Let’s have a look at “Devil Inside” by INXS. This is their most popular tune — it’s technically a pop song, but what’s really cool for us is that it has a lot of layered guitar parts with different sounds and tones. We’ll be using several pickup positions on the Strat, so there’s a lot to explore. We’ve got rock riffs, power chord parts, and some clean fills that lean into a bluesy-funk vibe.

There’s also a really fun guitar solo that uses the major pentatonic scale — a great chance to work on a major-sounding solo, since we tend to play minor ones more often. You’ll also hear plenty of double stops, which add to our phrasing vocabulary, and some triad chord shapes with different inversions and octaves. These layering techniques make the guitars sound big, which is a big part of this song’s charm.

So let’s dive in! We’ll start with an easy version that focuses only on power chords so we can get through the whole song and understand the structure better. Grab your guitar, and let’s get started on “Devil Inside”!
Full Song Performance
We’ll start things off with a full playalong of the song so you can hear how every part fits together—from the rhythm and main riffs to the lead and fills. This will give us a clear reference for the tone, feel, and structure of the song before we dive into each section step by step in the upcoming lesson segments.
Easy Guitar | Lesson
All right, let’s break down an easy version of “Devil Inside” using just power chords so we can focus on the structure and get comfortable with the song. We’ll start with a long C power chord after the drum intro, then move between simple shapes like C, A, F, G, and E throughout each section. The verses follow a repeating pattern, and the pre-chorus adds a short G–E–G movement that leads right into the chorus. The chorus alternates between C5 and F5, repeating twice for the first two choruses and four times for the final one. The bridge and outro use that same C–F change we practiced, and we’ll repeat it twelve times to close the tune. This is all about getting familiar with the rhythm, chord transitions, and structure before we move on to playing it in time with the band. So grab your guitar, get comfy with those power chords, and let’s learn the bones of “Devil Inside.”
Easy Guitar | Practice Session
Now that we know the structure, let’s practice “Devil Inside” together using our easy power chord version. We’ll keep that crunchy tone and stay relaxed with the strumming. Each section follows a simple flow: C to A for the verses, G to E for the pre-chorus, and C to F for the chorus. Remember, everything repeats a few times — four repeats for the double chorus and twelve for the outro — so we’ll count carefully to stay locked in. The goal here is to build consistency, keep the rhythm steady, and feel how the song moves from one section to the next. Stay loose, listen for the transitions, and don’t worry about perfection yet — we’re just getting comfortable playing through the full structure together.
Easy Guitar | Playalong
All right, this is where it all comes together! We’re going to play along with the band using the easy power chord version of “Devil Inside.” Keep your strumming tight and your changes clean — it’s all about groove and confidence now. You’ll hear the same structure we practiced: C and A in the verses, G and E in the pre-chorus, and C to F for the chorus, with that big repeating C–F pattern driving the outro home. Count your repeats carefully, stay in the pocket with the drums, and focus on locking in your rhythm. By the time we hit that final C chord, you’ll have played through the full song start to finish. Let’s plug in, turn it up, and jam along with “Devil Inside.”
Main Riff Guitar | Lesson
All right, let’s dig into the main riff — this is the hook of “Devil Inside.” It’s in C minor pentatonic, even though the song itself is in C major, which is something we see all the time in rock tunes. I’m using an overdriven tone with a little chorus to capture that synth-like texture from the original recording, but straight overdrive sounds great too. The riff lives mostly in the first three frets, starting on the third fret of the A string — that C note — and moving through short, punchy staccato notes, then answering with longer tones on the lower strings. It’s got a simple two-part call-and-response feel, and we’ll be repeating it twice in the intro and again in several spots across the song: after the first chorus as an interlude, in each verse during the C5 to F5 change, and again in the outro where we only play the first half of the riff for the final six repeats. It’s a tight, rhythmic idea that ties the whole track together, so let’s walk through it step by step before we play it in time.
Main Riff Guitar | Practice Session
Now that we know how the riff works, let’s practice it together. Keep that crunchy overdrive tone and focus on staying relaxed with the picking hand — we want those short, snappy staccato notes to really pop. The riff starts on the third fret of the A string, then moves down to the low E for a few longer notes before coming back up for that little melodic turnaround. We’ll go slow first, locking in the rhythm and making sure the two parts — the main phrase and its response — sound clear and even. Remember, this riff repeats twice in the intro and each verse during the C5 to F5 chord change, so getting comfortable with the timing here will make the rest of the song feel easy. Stay with me as we loop it a few times — focus on clean transitions, and really let that groove settle in.
