About this course

Wikipedia tells us that arranging is officially defined as "the art of preparing and adapting an already written composition for presentation into something other than its original form." Anyone who's attempted to arrange original tunes or covers would readily agree that creating a fresh and interesting arrangement for multiple instruments is very challenging. Now try to craft -- and perform -- a great arrangement for solo fingerstyle guitar; just this side of impossible, right?! [William Tell Overture up and under] Enter The Lone Arranger!

LeAnn Rimes refers to him as a "genius." Artie Traum called him a "guitaristic force of nature." Fingerstyle Guitar touts him as the "king of the fingerpickers" and Guitar Player magazine calls his playing "fun, scary and always inspiring." Have a listen to Pete Huttlinger's signature arrangements and performances of tunes like Stevie Wonder's Superstition or Steely's Josie and you too will be spewing accolades.

Fortunately for we aspiring fingerstyle arrangers and mortal pickers, Huttlinger is also a passionate and prolific educator. Dozens of songbooks and DVDs present his original material, valuable insight and compelling arrangements. In The Lone Arranger, you'll find that Pete has never dug so deep into the art and science of his arranging genius as he does here in his first interactive video course.

To demonstrate how influential a creative arrangement can be -- even with the simplest of melodies -- Pete steps you through three arrangements of Mary Had A Little Lamb, each with a different feel and each using a different approach. Pete continues similarly with three arrangements of 500 Miles.

Next up is a thorough examination of a medley featuring a Huttlinger original called The Happy Moat, which leads into the traditional fiddle tune, Flowers of Edinburgh. The entire medley is played in DADGAD and so, along with a wide variety of arranging insight and technique tips, you'll also get a solid feel for this highly popular tuning.

In the final section of the course, Pete drills down on three of his original tunes; Goodbye Chester, The View and Things Are Looking Up. Pete performs each of the tunes at tempo and then breaks the arrangements down part-by-part discussing both the compositional and arranging choices that he made during the development process.

As you work through The Lone Arranger with Pete, you'll expand your own arranging and composing skills with a wide variety of technical, melodic, harmonic and creative approaches, which in turn you can apply to your own arrangements and compositions.

By unmasking his amazing fingerstyle arranging skills and methodologies, Huttlinger generously shares his silver bullets so that you too can become The Lone Arranger. Hi-yo, Silver! Away!

The Lone Arranger Guide
Hi and welcome to The Lone Arranger! We're going to work through a lot of material together that I hope will inspire you to dig deeper and wider with your own fingerstyle arrangements.

One of the first things we'll do is take a very basic melody and work out several arrangements with it, each with a different feel and each using different techniques. This will demonstrate how influential a creative arrangement can be -- even with the simplest of melodies.

We'll then explore several of my arrangements, which I will dissect for you to present the range of technical, harmonic and creative approaches that I use myself when arranging.

With a little time and guidance, anyone can develop the creative and technical skills required to also become a Lone Arranger!

Lets dig in!
Mary's Lamb: Version 1
And now we begin… with Mary Had A Little Lamb. Hang with me because it's gonna get cool. But first we have to know the basic version of the song.
Mary's Lamb: Version 1
Here's the song in it's simplest form. I put a little James Taylor-esque pull off at the end of each time through the song. I play it three times through so you can get it firmly implanted in your head.
Mary's Lamb: Version 1
…and away we go. Here's a little breakdown of what I'm doing with this first arrangement of Mary Had A Little Lamb. As long as you can play D and A7 then you can play this tune. The fingerpicking may be a little tricky for some of you but hang with me and you'll get it.
Mary's Lamb: Version 2
Now we're going to look at our 2nd version of Mary Had A Little Lamb. It's getting cooler…
Mary's Lamb: Version 2
Now we're looking at some descending lines on the inside of the chords. That means that there is a musical line that is happening below the melody but above the bass. It's a fun technique to employ.
Mary's Lamb: Version 2
Now I'm going to explain what is going on with the descending line, explanation of the chords as they pass by. Notice how the C#, C etc have to be on the third string. Then notice the bass notes. It's all over a Pedal D note and that adds some great tension as well as release notes.

Not really useful for learning arranging

This course does not really teach how to arrange a song for fingerstyle performance. He mostly just walks you through his arrangements, telling you what he's doing, but not why. The first section does provide food for though by contrasting different arrangements of Mary Had a Little Lamb, but the arrangements are all fundamentally pretty similar in style. He assumes a fairly strong chord vocabulary and understanding of music theory.

Great Coverage of an Underrated Skill

Kudos to Pete and to Truefire for producing a course on the topic of arranging. Pete's teaching style peels back the layers to a song and then re-builds it brick by brick. This is super helpful for a few reasons, but for me it's valuable to see Pete make the many decisions an artist has to make when crafting a song. Applicable not just for arranging an existing melody, but also for writing a full piece from scratch. Recommended to beef up your understanding of what makes an instrumental piece work, even if you're not arranging for yourself.
