About this course

Rhythm and groove are vital elements of any song performance. It’s what paints the mood of the piece to support the story being told by the song’s melody and lyrics. As guitarists, having ready command of a wide palette of harmonic applications, creative approaches, and right-hand techniques broadens the palette of colors that we’re able to paint with.

In this Rhythm & Rhyme Edition of Songsmith, singer-songwriter Blair Dunlop focuses on all of the essential creative tools, harmonic options, and techniques you’ll need to take your compositions and performances to the next level.

Blair is an award-winning British singer-songwriter and guitarist who has toured widely across the globe. What sets Blair apart from his peers is the lyrical and musical maturity with which he writes coupled with his technical prowess on the guitar. We’re thrilled to welcome Blair to the family with his first TrueFire course, the Rhythm & Rhyme Edition of Songsmith. You will likewise be thrilled as you play your way through his wonderfully insightful and inspiring curriculum.

"I’ll demonstrate each technique and harmonic application for you and then we’ll explore their creative potential, in the context of a song. We’ll work through 8 song performance studies using my own compositions. Whether you’re covering songs or composing your own, you’ll be able to put these approaches, techniques, tunings, and chord voicings in your own playing.”

Grab your guitar and let’s “songsmith” with Blair Dunlop!

Songsmith: Rhythm & Rhyme
Hello, I'm Blair Dunlop. Welcome to Songsmith: Rhythm & Rhyme. Rhythm and groove are vital elements of any song performance because they paint the mood of the piece to support the story being told by the melody and lyrics. As a guitarist, a wide range of right-hand techniques equates to a wider palette of colors we're able to paint with.

In this version of Songsmith, we'll focus on a variety of right-hand techniques and rhythm approaches. We'll walk through each technique and explore their creative potential in the context of a song. Then we'll put those techniques to work across 8 song performance videos using my own compositions. Feel free to use any of these techniques, tunings, chord voicings and creative approaches whether you're covering songs or composing your own. All of the performances are tabbed and notated, and you'll be able to sync the tab and notation to the video using TrueFire's learning tool. So grab your guitar and let's get started!
Hybrid Picking Technique
In this video I'll break down the Hybrid Picking Technique. For me, this technique acts as a perfect medium between fingerpicking and flatpicking. It will allow you to really dig in with the pick when necessary, and seamlessly move between strumming and fingerpicking when you need to better accentuate individual notes.
Within My Citadel
This is a song that is characterised by the interplay between the melody and bass lines on the guitar. It utilises the hybrid picking technique, which provides dynamic flexibility for exploring the spiritual imagery in the lyric. It's in the tuning of DADGAD.

Lyrics:

I've had water poured upon me
I've been burnished by the sun
Seen the consequence of failing to know when to beat which drum
I've towed the line of knowing and not knowing what's begun
And I'm leaning with the wind where'er she blows

I took time to reacquaint myself with words that resonated
I took wine from every table when I'd left, unsatiated
I wrote lines I wrote lines for to keep me stimulated
For to keep my head above the undertow

When I'm longing for belonging
When you cast another spell
Like some Abrahamic call up to the skies
When my weariness is playing
But the record's warped and scratched
Are they remnants of a boyhood in disguise?

I've had feelings thrust upon me
I've seen the bottom of the well
I've been learning to protect myself from within my citadel
But the walls began to crumble, along with its personnel
I'd have scaled them but I was trapped within the dark

When I'm longing for belonging
When you cast another spell
Like some Abrahamic call up to the skies
When my weariness is playing
But the record's warped and scratched
Are they remnants of a boyhood in disguise?

Will my cup be overflowing
Be it water, be it wine?
As the arbiter of reason
I'd say either would be fine
Will my team win on the weekend?
Will the stars finally align?
Will any of it matter anyway?

When I'm longing for belonging
When you cast another spell
Like some Abrahamic call up to the skies
When my weariness is blowing
And the wind takes me aback
Are they remnants of some citadel of lies
Of lies, 'Are they remnants?' We cried
Are they remnants of a boyhood in disguise?

Intro Section
In this video I'll break down the Intro section of "Within My Citadel." We'll keep the same theme of rocking on the octave with the right hand and build it up from there.
Verse Section
Now we'll look at the verse sections of "Within My Citadel." In an effort to make the verses seem more hopeful, rather than hopeless, pay attention to how the rhythm and cadence help to lift the feeling of the song.
Chorus Section
Here we'll take a look at the chorus sections of "Within My Citadel." Don't be afraid to accentuate your vocal melody by matching your vocal rhythm or providing a rhythmic counterpoint.

Beautiful songs - useful range of expressive techniques

I haven't completed this course yet - it will take me many months of study - but so far it is immensely enjoyable and rewarding. My first thought was that I would need more stand-alone lessons on essential techniques before getting into the songs themselves. However, as I have dug into the course I find that learning different approaches and techniques in the contexts of Blair's own songs works very well - his breakdowns of the songs are clear and pretty comprensive. Prior to this course I had worked through Roberto dela Vecchia's Solo Flatpicking Handbook and Joe Robinson's Fingerstyle Synergy which gave me a good basis for tackling this advanced course.
