Rhythmic Grooves

About this course

Rhythm is the key to much of what we aspire to be as players. Solid rhythm chops get you more gigs; expand your musical horizons and translate directly into better soloing chops. And there's nothing better than a new "groove" to bust out of that proverbial "rut" we all sink into from time to time. No doubt about it, rhythm is king.

Rhythmic Grooves thoroughly examines how rhythmic patterns are constructed, executed and applied to various styles of music. This intensive study program will turn your whole understanding of rhythm right-side up.

You'll start at ground zero "playing drums" on the guitar and learning how to get "in the pocket" and stay there. You'll progress into the "ring/dead" technique with a variety of right-hand picking combinations. Slurs and ties are then introduced with techniques for deleting pick strokes. These approaches are then applied to creating and executing "bubble parts" for maximum groove. You'll learn to master double and triple subdivision patterns, advanced cross-rhythms and triplet rhythms. In short, Rhythmic Grooves will overhaul every aspect of your rhythm skills.

What you'll learn

  • Play syncopated 16th note rhythm patterns with proper alternate picking
  • Execute proper wrist motion for funk rhythm guitar
  • Play ghost notes for rhythmic texture
  • Create dynamic contrast with accents on beats 1, 3 (kick) and 2, 4 (backbeat)
  • Use proper pick angle for funk tone

Lesson 1
In this series you will learn how to master the art of sixteenth note funk rhythms both in straight and shuffle feels. You'll learn how to create interesting variations of ring-dead combinations without losing the groove as well as keeping your picking organized so you don't get "turned around." Emphasis on playing the guitar like a drum kit will allow you to function as the kick, snare and hi-hat thus creating an absolute solid foundation for your playing. You'll be given tips on how to improve your tone, reduce muscular tension, apply accents and build endurance.

What I needed!

I am slow at strumming and missed a step plan to improve. This course does that, good clear focus on the strumming techniques, not skipping over any detail and gradually increasing complexity at a perfect pace for me. I practice and play along drum machines, click tracks and sequencers, this course fits perfectly in that setup and I am happily progressing my sixteenth note strumming.

Foundational knowledge every guitarist should have

Admittedly, when I first bought this course, I was under the impression that Brad would simply teach us a few groups and perhaps a few ideas to take away. Little did I realize that this course is far more than giving you a couple of grooves to work with. I would go as far as to say that this course doesn’t give you grooves, but teaches you to groove. As with all of Brad‘s courses, he lays down the foundation for grooving in easy to digest lessons. One might be inclined to believe that the beginning lessons are simple enough to skip over. However, it’s not until you get into the third or fourth lesson that you realize that those deceptively simple lessons at the beginning lay the groundwork for the lessons that follow. Brad doesn’t just simply teach you to play the grooves, but he teaches you to listen and feel those grooves. Within the first few lessons, many of the grooves that I had once felt almost impossible to play, I can now play with ease and I’m hearing and feeling these grooves in a totally different light. This is a testament to Brad’s teaching, which is sound and stands the test of time. Again, this course is the difference between learning a groove and learning to groove.
