Guitar Gym: Alternate Picking Workouts

About this course

In this edition of Guitar Gym, Chris Buono focuses on developing your alternate picking technique with an emphasis on precision, timing, endurance and speed. Buono will guide you through 27 Workouts across 3 levels. In Level 1 you'll learn about the concept of outside and inside "pivots" through simple intervallic playing fueled by perfect 5ths with Workouts ranging from 40 BPM to 100 BPM. In Level 2 the outside and inside pivot-based Workouts become more challenging as they work through sequences of perfect 4ths and the tempos increase to 50 BPM through 110 BPM. Level 3 ups the ante with a trio of Workouts that chops up a major scale in perfect 5ths in every possible direction at a tempo range of 60 BPM and 120 BPM.

Each Guitar Gym course focuses on a specific guitar technique by guiding the student through a deliberately prescribed series of optimized workouts, organized across a series of levels with increasing intensity. Buono demonstrates each of the workouts by explaining how the workout is engineered and then showing you how to play the workout correctly.

The workouts are ALL interactive video playalongs -- Buono performs each workout with you, for the correct amount of time, at all of the prescribed tempos. You will not be alone in the shed!

All of the workouts also include text guides, PDF charts, Guitar Pro files and all of the practice metronome tracks, at all of the prescribed tempos. Everything you need to develop monster chops by practicing correctly is included.

Practice does NOT make perfect -- "perfect" practice does. We've heard this time and again from our instructors and we get it; practice the wrong thing, or practice the wrong way, and you'll learn how to play it perfectly wrong. Makes "perfect" sense but what exactly do we practice, and how specifically do we practice it? TrueFire's resident Professor of the Deep, Chris Buono has invested the last couple of decades coming up with the answer.

Developing solid guitar techniques is particularly subject to the quality and intensity of your practice regimens -- you'll only get so far relying on repetition and frequency alone. Chris Buono's Guitar Gym workouts will take you the rest of the way with 12 collections of tried, tested and proven intensive workouts for Triad Arpeggios, Tapping, Hybrid Picking, Alternate Picking, Hammers & Pull-Offs, Power Chords, Scales, Speed Picking,Triads, Harmonic Minor Triad Chord Scales, Major Triad Chord Scales and Melodic Minor Triad Chord Scales

Guitar Gym: Alternate Picking
Chops: Our heroes have them and we all want them. In order to get them you gotta do what any other person training to better themselves in some way would do - get to the gym! Well, that's exactly what you're going to do - welcome to the Guitar Gym series. No matter what level you're at or if you have various strong and weak points in your technique, Guitar Gym has you covered. Each course is comprised of a collection of leveled workouts waiting for you to dig into.

Here in Guitar Gym Alternate Picking it's all about up, down, up, down and all around with your pick. Split into three leveled sections Guitar Gym Alternate Picking doles out a comprehensive, rigorous game plan for you to get your picking together. Each level is split up into three workouts made up of 13 video segments starting with the Overview where I'll give you a quick synopsis of what's in store. The following 12 videos are the three workouts further split up into three tempos - slow, medium, fast - that all have an accompanying introduction video where I explain the ins and outs on how to play the workout. Each workout is clearly laid out for you in Power Tab and will be readily available for you to download right from the TrueFire player. In the three actual workout videos I will play through the workout for the amount of time I prescribe in the overview and introduction videos so you always have me right there with you (in various views) as you sweat it all out here in Guitar Gym.

At the heart of any drilling regimen including this one is precise timing. It not only keeps things orderly in all aspects of music, but it also serves as a guide and indicator as to how you're progressing. What's more, anyone who has been in the chops shed knows that one of the most important practices is to increase the tempo incrementally one-by-one. While the three parts of each workout will be presented in a slow-medium-fast fashion in regards to tempo, it's up to you to take the workout into your own shed and incrementally up the tempo while you practice, preparing you for the next tempo mark. Dig? Ready!?
Working Out in the Gym
Developing great chops is not about just mindlessly drilling an exercise over and over. There has to be a method to the madness...

First and foremost you need to create what I call in my Guitar Gym Sherpa classroom a Workout Schedule. My Workout Schedules carve out a set amount of time on set days of the week that slot out precisely what it your going to play. This helps big time and results are inspiring to say the least! And, this is not as much time as you might expect. If you're working on just one skill such as the one here in this course you need but 15-30 minutes a day depending on how many Workouts you want to drill down. That said, you could set it up so you do a morning and evening session. The key is focused, disciplined practice time with a metronome. Just stick to your "WS" and let your fingers do the rest!

Speaking of focus and discipline when starting to put together your own WS keep this mantra in mind: You absolutely must start out playing the Workouts slow and gradually climb up the tempo ladder to the top tempo tier. No if's, and's or lazy butts about it. Even if you think you can play the Workout at the medium tempo, trust me, knock it down to the lowest tier and build. You may be masking playing anomalies you don't even know are there by jumping into passages at a medium to high tempo. Slowing down what you're playing will reveal what you may need to work on. Do it!

Not only does starting out at the lowest tempo tier ensure you'll get the most out of your practice time, but it will also help to prevent any injuries. Notice I mentioned 15-30 minute Workout Schedules, spaced out if you want to do more, and not marathon sessions. Playing in reasonable blocks of time is much safer way to build your muscle memory as well as help you attain the ultimate skill in playing proficiently on the guitar: The art of relaxation. If you're relaxed and keeping your practice time calculated and spaced out, you'll be safe successful.
Alternate Picking
Ready to dig in on some Alternate Picking Workouts?! Just like getting basic chord changing techniques together will carry over to the most complex set of changes so will basic alternate picking techniques carry over to the most insane lines you'll eventually come up against or compose.

When it comes to alternate picking on multiple strings it's all about getting from one string to the next. There's a few ways to do it, but the best way to start out is picking on the outsides of the strings first. The idea is to "pivot" the pick on the outside borders of the strings instead of the inside where it's a little more challenging. We deal with the opposite approach in the Workout #3.
Alternate Picking: Level 1
Taking a look at this first Level 1 Alternate Picking Workout you may feel a sense of deja vu, especially if you're a rock or metal enthusiast. Rightfully so as it makes use of the ultimate two-note chord - the power chord! Seeing that it's crucial you understand and learn the outside pivot technique, these Workouts are meant to be based on something you already know [re: simple] so you can focus on what's important.

Frustrating to say the least.

Levels 1 and 2 were challenging, fun, and rewarding - but the jump from level 2 to level 3 has had me stuck for weeks, still wondering why I'm even bothering, because it's not musical or enjoyable. It would have been nice to ease our way into string skipping and uber-complicated patterns, but instead he left me in the dust and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Brilliant! Just what I needed.

Been playing for a couple of years & got into the habit of economy picking, feels very natural to me & really ingrained in my muscle memory, but now I'm starting to learn more challenging songs & I really need to get my alternate picking under control. This is great! Fighting through my natural instincts to economy pick and I made it through Level 1, the last excercise was quite challenging for me & took some time, so looking forward to Level 2 getting me into shape!

Harder than you think

I thought that alternate picking was pretty simple and straightforward. I started this course in an effort to revisit fundamental skills, and it has been a great way to assess my picking. I am surprised how often my picking stumbles. Chris does.a great job keeping you accountable and offering a very systematic approach.

DO THE WORK.

I've been playing guitar since I was 18 years old. There was no internet when I started playing, all I had was books, friends that already played, and Wednesday afternoon music lessons at college. Now, I'm 46 and I'm wishing I'd had Guitar Gym when I started all that time ago. People have told me I'm pretty good in the past, but nobody knows your own playing like you do. I knew I could be MUCH BETTER. As a fan of lifelong learning and trying to be better than the guy I was yesterday, I decided to try the Alternate Picking Workouts course after being lured in by Chris and his non-conventional style. It was a good decision. The exercises start off a little on the easy side, but by the time you've mastered Level 1 and dismissed it as too simple, Level 2 comes out of nowhere and smacks you in the face. Yes, some of the exercises are a little atonal and esoteric, (if you want something more tune-oriented, the Scale Workouts course follows the same structure pretty much) but that's all part of the fun. At least to me. Being able to build up the tempo as you go really hammers the patterns home so by the time you're at the top of the tempo ladder, you're all set. Honestly, this course has already changed my picking technique for the better and I've been doing this for 45 minutes to an hour every day for around 6 weeks. I'd never heard of an 'inside pivot' before this, but now they feel natural. It takes practice, but if you're willing to put the time in, it will pay off. A couple of observations that may or may not be a thing, or may just be me personally: 1)To really get the benefit of these exercises, you really need to R-E-L-A-X. I can't emphasise this enough. It really slows everything down when you get to the higher tempos and stops you feeling overwhelmed. 2) Build up by learning the exercises/patterns at the slower tempos first. If you go straight to playing faster, you won't feel the benefits. 3) I personally find the emphasis switching to the major scale in Level 3 a little discombobulating. The first workout in Level 3 I just CAN'T get my head around even if I slow it down. It's very complex and there's a lot of string-skipping that isn't present in the earlier workouts. When you combine this with the quicker tempo from the get-go, it's very, very tough to fathom. 4) The exercises get longer later on and it's hard to stay focused. This might just be me though. I'm trying to do these workouts on a Fender Jazzmaster which probably isn't the best idea as I've discovered the scale length doesn't suit me (I get some wrist and shoulder pain if I'm not careful) but once I swap it out for something different, I'm hoping it'll all be more comfortable. But all in all, this course is great and Chris is a fantastic teacher. I've also discovered that my ability sits somewhere between intermediate and advanced thanks to this course, and it's great to have something to work with and aim for. Thank you so much Chris for this course and your great teaching, it's appreciated!
