Flamenco Guitar with Mario DaSilva (JamPlay)

About this course

Flamenco guitar is a rich, emotive art form rooted in centuries of Spanish tradition, and in Flamenco Guitar with Mario DaSilva, you'll explore this dynamic style through one of its most passionate interpreters. Whether you’re captivated by the fiery rhythms, intricate fingerwork, or the dance-driven energy of Flamenco, this course offers an authentic deep dive into the techniques, patterns, and cultural foundations of the genre.

Mario begins by breaking down essential right-hand techniques, including a wide range of rasgueado patterns, from basic strumming to five- and six-stroke flourishes. You’ll develop control and power through arpeggio exercises, ligado runs, and the explosive alzapúa technique. Tremolo and scale practice will further enhance your melodic touch, while endurance and right-hand drills build the physical conditioning needed to play with both finesse and fire.

As your skills progress, you’ll learn how to accompany traditional Flamenco dance forms such as the Soleares, Bulerías, Farruca, Alegrias, Guajiras, Seguiriyas, and Rumba. Mario teaches how to navigate compás (rhythmic cycles), falsetas (melodic passages), and coplas (sung verses), giving you the tools to support dancers and singers with the precision and passion Flamenco demands.

Each lesson is steeped in tradition but presented in a clear, accessible format, allowing guitarists of all levels to connect with this expressive style. By the end of the course, you’ll not only understand the mechanics of Flamenco—you’ll feel its pulse and be able to channel its emotional intensity through your own playing.

Whether you're a fingerstyle enthusiast or a guitarist drawn to Flamenco’s cultural depth and technical challenge, Flamenco Guitar with Mario DaSilva is your gateway to mastering this timeless art form.

Solid introduction to Flamenco

Finally! An accurate introduction to historically representative flamenco, one of the world's great guitar traditions, and one which, in my opinion, has been under-represented on TrueFire previously (yes, I love blues-rock too, but man, let's branch out a little). This course provides a great starting point for anyone interested in the flamenco style. Yes, it is at an introductory level, and yes, you will likely need a little pre-existing ability in fingerstyle guitar technique to get the most out it, but it is true to the flamenco tradition and is presented by someone who is coming directly from that tradition. This sets it apart from some other instruction that tends to come from outside the tradition and often applies the 'flamenco' label to the usage of a minimal handful of flamenco techniques in pop music, or which simply contains spicy chords or uses the Phrygian mode or the Andalusian cadence... I mean if we are going to settle for that we could just call Ray Charles' 'Hit the Road, Jack' flamenco, and be done with it :) However, if you want to begin to learn traditional flamenco, with all the additional complexities and sophistication that it offers, or if you wish to develop a firm foundation for branching out into a variety of North African and Middle Easter musics, or even if your goal is just pick up a handful of the core techniques that are re-used in a variety of other styles (particularly Cuban and South American styles), then this is the TrueFire course I would recommend. It is an introduction, but it is an accurate and a comprehensive introduction where you learn the fundamentals of the tradition properly but also get a fairly comprehensive tour of how those fundamentals are applied in different harmonic and rhythmic contexts and how they are used in different regional sub-styles. Solid course!
