World-class players like Doc Watson, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, Brad Paisley, Martin Taylor, and Tommy Emmanuel use dozens of fingerpicking patterns and variations to compliment the styling, mood and storyline of their songs.
Gareth Pearson’s collection of 30 Fingerpicking Patterns is an accelerated, hands-on curriculum designed to quickly expand your palette of patterns and show you how to create your own variations for virtually any genre from Americana and Folk, to Rock, Country and even Jazz.
”I’ll show you 30 of my favorite and most useful fingerpicking patterns and variations that can be used across a wide variety of genres and feels. I’ve deliberately selected these 30 patterns so that you can easily connect them, edit them, create your own variations, and make them your own.
Get just a few of these fingerpicking patterns under your belt and you’ll be amazed how they can stylize any tune to keep things fresh and interesting for your audience.”
In addition to performing the pattern with multi-angle views, Gareth will emphasize and demonstrate the right and left-hand techniques that you’ll need a grip on to play the pattern correctly.
Funky Do, The Reed Rumble, Gospel Truth, Mountain Frail, Waltz Boogie, Minor Five Claw, Swing Time, Jazz Move, The Rhapsody Bounce, and Minor 5 Dance are just 10 of the 30 patterns that you’ll have command of after playing your way through Gareth’s entire collection.
You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance examples. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.
Grab your guitar and let's dig in with Gareth Pearson!

Hi Gareth Pearson here, welcome to 30 DIY Fingerpicking Patterns You Must Know. Most working guitar players know a handful of fingerpicking patterns, which they tend to rely on when gigging, jamming or composing their own original songs. On the other hand, world-class players like Doc Watson, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, Brad Paisley, Martin Taylor, and Tommy Emmanuel use dozens of patterns and variations to compliment the style and mood of their music. In this course, I’ll be sharing a wide range of fingerpicking patterns, covering a variety of genres and feels, which you can then mix, match and make your own. Everything is tabbed and synced to the video, and using TrueFire’s learning tools, you can slow down or loop any of the video lessons to learn at your own pace. Grab your guitar, and let’s go.
2Forward Rising
All right. This is a picking pattern called Forward Rising. It's basically a forward move in arpeggio in the Key of C. First I'll play it and then I'll break it down for you!
3There & Back
Picking pattern two is called There & Back. I'm basically doing a forward role and a backward role at the same time.
4There & Back Again
Pattern number three is a variation of There & Back from the last lesson. I call this one simply There & Back Again. I'll kick things off with a performance and then I'll break it all down for you in detail.
5Mountain Frail
Pattern number four is something I like to call mountain frail, which is gonna utilize the frail in technique. I'll kick things off with a performance and then I'll break it all down for you in detail.
6Cold Mountain
This is pattern number five. It's called Cold Mountain. I'll kick things off with a performance and then I'll break it all down for you in detail.
7Gospel Truth
This pattern is called Gospel Truth. I'll kick things off with a performance and then I'll break it all down for you in detail.
A good course for expanding your fingerstyle and breaking out of self limiting patterns. Gareth is a good and versatile player who strikes a good balance of useful verbal and playing instruction.

Review of 30 DIY Fingerpicking Patterns You Must Know
This is a really fun course. The patterns were uplifting and a joy to hear. I really liked that right-hand fingering p,i,m,a fingerings were given which makes it much easier and fun to play. Very good job.
