Boogie's Blues

About this course

Any musician growing up in Louisiana is heavily influenced by the “gumbo” of musical styles being played all around them — soul, gospel, rock, country, jazz, zydeco, and of course, the blues.

Jonathon “Boogie” Long took those influences to a whole new level by incorporating the characteristic feels and techniques of these distinct musical styles into his masterful blues playing. Jonathon shows you how to do the same in this TrueFire masterclass, Boogie’s Blues.

“His evolution from gospel to blues to the whole spectrum of Southern-inspired music is a delight to experience,” says OffBeat Magazine. We’re thrilled to welcome Jonathon to the family with his first TrueFire course.

”I’ll show you how to pull in gospel and soul elements, rapid-fire chicken pickin’ lines, modern fusion flavors, and other stylistic approaches to come up with a truly original, and signature sounding blend of your own.

We’ll also cover the number system to quickly identify chord positions, essential scale boxes for soloing, legato techniques like tapping and “cheat sweeps”, swampy sixteenth note rhythms, classic electric blues licks with big bends and vibrato, and many other moves you can use to make your own blues solos distinctive.”

Jonathon will demonstrate all of the stylistic approaches and you’ll apply them in a musical context, by soloing over 10 blues grooves, in an assortment of feels, tempos and keys.

You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the key examples and performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are also included to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar, and let’s dig in with Jonathon “Boogie” Long!

Boogie's Blues
Hey, it’s Jonathon Boogie Long here. Welcome to Boogie’s Blues.

Growing up in Louisiana, my blues playing was heavily influenced by the “gumbo” of musical styles you hear all around you.

In this course, I'll share my approaches for stylizing your blues solos using characteristic feels and techniques from soul, gospel, country, zydeco and even fusion rock.

We'll talk about how to use the number system to quickly identify chord positions for playing songs, essential scale boxes for soloing, legato techniques, swampy rhythms, big bends, and more to come up with an original, and signature sounding blend of your own that you can take to the blues jam right away.

I'm also gonna show you how to pull in gospel and soul embellishments, rapid-fire chicken pickin lines, and modern fusion flavors as we play our way through ten grooves in an assortment of blues feels and keys.

Everything is tabbed and synced to the video, and using TrueFire’s learning tools, you can slow down or loop any of the video lessons to learn at your own pace.

My hope is that this course will help you feel more comfortable with the neck and enhance your own cross-genre creativity. So, grab your guitar, and let’s go.

Thorough - easy to understand

I've been studying guitar for 20 years and I at least browse every single blues related curriculum that comes up at TruFire and Boogies technique with the shape of the chords in a major scale is genius. Releasing understand and articulated well. He's also just a solid likable dude. Thanks again guys. Truefire has changed my life as a guitar player.

Top Quality Course

Jonathon is a good instructor. He gave a clear overview of the number system. He’s really does good insight into chord progressions. I’m about 1/4 through the course. An aha moment was using a Pentatonic scale, and just a couple of “boxes” to build a guitar solo, or a fill. But, boy does the cat have some chops. So, check it out for a modern take in Blues, Gosple, and a little Soul for some spice.
