About this course

Guitarists spend the majority of their stage time playing rhythm guitar, which is one good reason why it's critical to develop solid rhythm guitar skills. Not only does it lay the foundation for the music, but it also showcases your timing and feel. A solid rhythmic groove can make even the most basic chord progression sound interesting, and it gives the lead guitarist the room they need to shine.

Jack Ruch is widely acknowledged as having top-notch rhythm chops, which is why we’re thrilled to announce his new course, Jack’s Manual for Tasty Blues Rhythm.

”In this ‘manual’ for tasty blues rhythm, I’ll show you flavorful approaches for playing rhythm guitar over four must-know blues feels – Shuffles, Slow Blues, Minor Blues and a Rockin’ Blues.

I’ll demonstrate eight of my go-to approaches, we’ll apply them over jam tracks for context, and then I’ll break each down for you in juicy detail.

Everything I show you I’ve learned myself over decades of playing guitar so I’m really happy to put it all together in this manual.”

Jack will demonstrate and show you how to play two rhythm guitar variations for a blues shuffle in A, two variations for a slow blues in G, two more for a straight minor blues feel, and then wrap things up with two rhythm approaches for classic rockin’ blues.

You’ll have all of TrueFire’s advanced learning tools at your finger tips to personalize your workspace and learn at your own pace.

You can loop, slow down, or speed up any section of a lesson. Plus, all of the tab and notation is synced to the videos for the optimal learning experience. You’ll also get tab and standard notation files to print out, Guitar Pro files, and all of the backing tracks to practice with.

Grab your guitar, and let’s dig in with Jack Ruch!

The Essential Shuffle Feel
When it comes to playing the blues, the shuffle is definitely the most popular type of groove you'll encounter. And, there are tons of different interpretations of this groove, with various types of shuffles. As you explore the blues music over different regions and decades, you'll come across numerous variations on this groove. But before we delve into today's example, let's quickly understand where the shuffle came from.
Shuffle in A: Rhythm 1
The track we're gonna play today is a 12 bar Blues shuffle in the key of a, it is a very straightforward 1, 4, 5 progression. And this feel is sort of in the sort of uptown blues style of like a BB King or Freddie King.

Shuffle in A: Rhythm 1
Alright, so we're starting off this track with some staccato chord jabs over the form. The first chord voicing I'm using is one of my favorites for uptown big band, jazzy style of playing the blues. It's like an A13 chord with the flat seven in the root, G followed by the third C sharp, the sixth or the 13th, F sharp, and then the root on top. It's an interesting voicing because the root isn't in the bass. You could almost see it as playing an F# minor chord and sliding the root up to G. It gives you a really fat, rich sound that's great for these percussive jabs and the rhythm that I'm playing.
Shuffle in A: Rhythm 2
Alright, let's dive deeper into this shuffle groove and explore some additional concepts that'll come in handy when playing rhythm guitar. One technique to add is incorporating fills between our percussive chord stabs. I drew inspiration from listening to organ and piano players for this.

Worth the effort!

When I watched the first video of what Jack was offering here I didn't think it was that useful. But by the third or fourth video I became a rabid fan. His quiet speaking style belies a mastery of the tone, theory and performance of the Blues. ( I believe I even saw him in Nashville rip open the guitar part of LZ's "Been a long time since I Rock n Rolled". ) I have many goto courses and instructors from TrueFire and they are all inspiring. Jack Ruch is among them.

Great lesson for intermediate or advanced guitarists.

Jack is really an excellent instructor. He clearly explains the lesson and gives very meaningful background information. I am not a performing artist but love hearing and understanding the work from a professional’s perspective. Highly recommended. Fascinating to learn some pretty sophisticated chord shapes.
