Learn How To Sing

About this course

“Everyone who can speak can learn to use a singing voice,” says Joanne Rutkowski, professor of music education at Penn University. “The quality of the voice is dependent on many factors; however, barring a physical vocal disability, everyone can learn to sing well enough to sing basic songs.”

Yes, you really can learn how to sing! Just like learning any instrument, you simply need to train your vocal cords. You’re ahead of the game if you already play an instrument because you’re familiar with musical concepts such as pitch, intervals and harmony.

Eben Pariser designed this Learn How To Sing course to help you develop the fundamental vocal skills you’ll need to become a lead or back up singer. The interactive video format of the course provides an accelerated learning experience for developing the skills by practicing back and forth with Eben across 25 vocal workouts.

”Building on what you already know by learning core vocal skills for breath control, articulating vowel sounds and harmonizing over a melody will train your “singing voice” for lead or back-up vocals.

Learning these core skills is the primary focus of this course. Using a custom designed set of visual tools and representations, I’ll guide you through all the key concepts and techniques you need to know.

Together, we’ll sing our way through the entire course, across a series of 25 vocal training workouts. I’ll explain the core concepts behind each workout, and then we’ll trade back and forth as practice the workout together.

We’ll work on essential intervals like fifths and fourths, forming different consonant and vowel sounds, lip and tongue trill exercises, singing lines and runs, finding and singing harmonies in thirds, and many more core skills.”

Eben Pariser studied music at the Oberlin Conservatory. He worked for nine years as a neuroscientist, researching birdsong and neurogenesis at New York's Rockefeller University and co-authoring several papers in prominent scientific journals, before shifting to music full-time. He plays guitar and sings in Goodnight Moonshine, and Roosevelt Dime, and has recently become the musical director for Red Molly. His songs "Willow Tree" and "Oh To Be" have hit #1 and #6 on the folk charts. We’re thrilled to welcome to the family with his first TrueFire course, Learn How To Sing!

Using a custom designed set of visual tools and representations, Eben will guide you through all of the key concepts and techniques as you work through the course.

A full set of exercises will also be included as mp3 files for you to take your vocal training on the go. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Let’s start singing with Eben Pariser!

Learn How To Sing
Hey I’m Eben Pariser.

Yes, you really can learn how to sing. Just like learning any instrument, you simply need to train your vocal cords.

If you already play an instrument, you're ahead of the game because you're familiar with musical concepts such as pitch, intervals and harmony.

Building on what you already know by learning vocal skills for breath control, articulating vowel sounds and harmonizing over a melody will train your “singing voice” for lead or back-up vocals.

In this course, I'm going to guide you through a series of 25 interactive vocal training workouts to help you build all of the foundational skills you need to become a better singer. I'll explain the core concepts behind each, and then we'll trade back and forth as we work each exercise up and down the scale.

Using a custom designed set of visual tools and representations, I'll guide you through all the key concepts and techniques you need to know.

We'll work out essential intervals like fifths and fourths, forming different consonant and vowel sounds, lip and tongue trill exercises, singing lines and runs, finding and singing harmonies in thirds, and more.

You'll sing your way through this entire course, and of course the full set of interactive workouts will also be included as mp3 files for you to take your vocal training on the go.

No need to grab an instrument, because for this course your instrument is your body. So if you're ready, let’s learn how to sing!
Working with the Course
This course is designed to be done as a routine, like a workout, although you don't have to do it all on the first try! At first you may want to spend more time with the explanations so you understand how each piece works. Over time you will be able to run the whole thing in series. Eventually you can skip the explanations and even take the whole thing on the go with the audio only version. Enjoy the journey!
Prepare the Body for Singing
Music asks a lot of our bodies and minds. We are going to honor that and do some warm-ups and exercises to help optimize and prepare the body and mind for singing and playing music.
Jaw Positioning & Movement
Take a moment to think about your jaw. One way to release the jaw is to mimic a bored teenager falling asleep in class! Let’s try to release the jaw and keep it loose for every in-breath. Just a quick note! In the video I say that the jaw is not connected to your muscles, I meant to say "bones"!
Support Breath
Support breath is central to good singing. We are learning to engage and coordinate the big muscles in the abdomen so that our sound can be strong, consistent, and we don't run out of breath! One great way to learn is with what I call a “triple-breath.”
The Breath Meter
An interactive tool to help you time your breathing!
Recognizing the "Up a Fifth" Sound
Three easy ways to hear a “fifth” in your head: The Star Wars Theme, Wizard Of Oz, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

A MUST for anybody who wants to get into singing!

What a great course! I wish I had this when I was just starting out, would have saved me vocal polyp surgery! Seriously. Eben does a great job of laying out the lessons and packs a lot of practical technique tips along the way that are so valuable. I especially liked the advanced technology used in the teaching, like the accompanying graphics that show you how your breathing should go for the exercise. So great to practice to! So if you're a guitarist and you want to sound better than "Keef" (jk!) then pick up this course and start confidently using your voice.

"How to Sing"

I would have given the course a very good rating but it was not a selection option. There are a lot of good vocal exercises in this course to enhance your singing. Thank you

This course is a must if you want to start singing

This is an exceptional set of lessons! The instructor is positive, engaging and encouraging. The lessons are laid out well. You'll make progress quicker than you believe and will be singing along in harmony by the end. Every few years I think it's time to add singing to my musical skills. I get started, stumble and then stick to guitar. This set of lessons provided an epiphany and I finally broke through the mental barrier of not being able to sing. Yes you can!

Great course, worth downloading

Great course. I play other instruments, but this is my first introduction to sing (I want to sing along), and it has been easy and great to follow. I think it is worth to pay for the course because it has a lot of exercises to practice daily.
