Practice Sessions: Single String Improvisation

About this course

Guitarists are typically taught to play positionally, which is important but also tends to limit a player’s command of the fretboard.

Breaking away from positional playing and learning how play horizontally up and down the neck is the key to being able to navigate the fretboard freely and tap unlimited creative opportunities.

In Andy Aledort’s Single String Improvisation edition of Practice Sessions, you’ll learn and practice eight creative approaches for crafting melodies, licks, and improvisations - using just a single string!

”In this course, I’ll show eight creative approaches for crafting melodies, licks and improvisations using just a single string. Once you’re comfortable with the single string approach, you’ll be able to use multiple strings with the freedom to play and improvise all over the neck.

I’ll kick off each of the eight practice sessions with an overview and demonstration of the single string approach that we’ll focus on. I’ll perform an example over a backing track, to give you a feel for how it sounds and feels in a musical context.

We’ll cap off each practice session by trading back and forth, over the backing track, as I guide you through the core approach and then some expanded variations. You’ll also have TrueFire’s learning tools to help you work with the lessons.”

What makes this format really special is how you’ll get these approaches firmly under your fingers -- you’ll practice each of the approaches together with Andy, in a series of interactive practice sessions.

After demonstrating the single string approaches, Andy will roll the track and you’ll trade back and forth as he guides you through the core examples followed by several variations and embellishments.

Working regularly with these 8 “practice sessions” will unleash your creativity and unlock the fretboard freedom that we all aspire to achieve.

You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let’s practice with Andy Aledort!

E Blues Scale
We're going to start things off by taking a look at the E Blues scale and how it falls on the high E string. First I will perform it, then we'll run through a practice session.

Excellent way to learn the whole fretboard.

I have always liked Andy Aledort's courses and think this is his best. Like many people, I have always had difficulty learning the notes on the fretboard despite going through the rigmarole of playing all the Cs, then all the Fs, and so on. This is helpful but lacks a musical context. Single-string improvisation teaches the notes up and down the neck in a way that is both musical and memorable. I recommend this course to anyone who wants to gain a command of the guitar neck.

Practice Sessions: Single String Improvisation

This is a very helpful course. The focus here is to improvise using several different scale patterns up and down the same string. First we are given a scale and we find the available notes up and down the string. Then Veteran Instructor Andy Aledort gives a lick or ways of finessing the notes and we practice along with various tracks. Using a single string rather than playing up and down the positions lets us keep the same timbre of each string. Also a great fringe benefit is learning the notes up and down each string up and down the neck! Very Helpful Course!

practice sessions: single string improvisation

As a slide guitar player I found this course so valuable. Lots of clear and concise instruction on improvising interesting sounds and patterns up and down the neck. Though not mentioned in the course material, this is a slide guitar players key to vertical soloing.
