Essentials: Riffin' Jazz Blues

About this course

Players like Howard Roberts, Herb Ellis, and Charlie Christian were masters of playing melodic riffs over jazz blues changes. It also happens to be one of the easiest and most effective ways to approach soloing and improvisation — no complicated harmony or chord fingerings to think about and no complicated harmony or chord fingerings to think about.

Frank Vignola’s Riffin’ Jazz Blues edition of Essentials reveals Frank’s personal approach for playing melodic riffs and improvising, over jazz blues changes.

”Every guitarist should know how to play through a few jazz blues tunes and one of the most effective ways to play through the changes of a Jazz Blues is by playing melodic riffs.

It’s one of my favorite ways to play Jazz Blues and I’m excited to share some of my own riff-based approaches with you right here in this course.

We’ll work through ten riff-based Jazz Blues performance studies together. Each study highlights a different riffing jazz blues approach over a different set of changes in a different key.

I’ll break each down for you in detail so you can get it under your fingers and you’ll have all of TrueFire’s learning tools to work with along the way. Playing your way through the course is going to be a lot of fun, and it’ll definitely help take your Jazz Blues game to the next level.”

Frank designed the range of 10 soloing performance studies to cover the most popular jazz blues chord progressions, from traditional jazz to bebop to soul jazz.

Frank will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.

You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are also included to work with on your own.

Grab your guitar, and let’s dig in with Frank Vignola!

Helpful basic intro for rockers

Deliberately kept at a very simple level, certainly no challenge for intermediate rockers or better, but that's understandable given the aims of the course. I figured out most of the scales/arpeggios for myself but it would have been useful to have some more explanations and some suggestions for other situations to which the concepts can be transfered.
