Practice Sessions: Blues Bending

About this course

String Bending is one of the most expressive and essential highly personal techniques for guitarists. Kid Andersen’s Blues Bending edition of Practice Sessions focuses on 8 key bending techniques: shake bends, super wide bends, double stop bends, Faux horn section bends, slippery bends, Steel guitar double stop bends, and Kid’s own signature “slide without a slide” bends.

"In this hands-on course, we’ll dig deep into string bending technique by working on 8 key approaches that I personally use in my blues solos every day in the studio and on the stage.

What makes this format really special is how you’ll get these approaches firmly under your fingers -- we’ll practice each of these 8 bending techniques together in an interactive practice session.

I’ll kick off each study with an analysis of the technique and then I’ll perform an example lick over a backing track to give you a feel for how it sits in a groove.

We’ll start out by bending and shaking a note into the root - the cornerstone of any explosive blues solo. Next, we’ll work on super wide bends a la Buddy Guy. Then, we’ll look at Chuck Berry style double stop bends.

We’ll dig into Faux horn section bends and slippery bends of guys like Jimi Hendrix. There’s rapid fire, multi-finger bends, steel guitar-esque double stop bends, and finally my own patented “slide without a slide” type bends."

You’ll cap off each bending study together with a hands-on practice session. Kid will roll the track and you’ll trade back and forth as Kid guides you through the core bending examples followed by several variations and embellishments.

Working regularly with these “interactive practice sessions” is the key to having command of all 8 bending techniques.

You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson. You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own as well.

Grab your guitar and let’s dig in with Kid Anderson!

Practice Sessions: Blues Bending
Hi, I'm Kid Andersen. Welcome to this Blues Bending edition of Practice Sessions!

String Bending is one of the most expressive and essential highly personal techniques for guitarists. In this hands-on course, we'll dig deep into string bending technique by working on 8 key approaches that I personally use in my blues solos every day.

What makes this format really special is how you'll get these approaches firmly under your fingers -- we'll practice each of these 8 bending techniques together in an interactive practice session. We'll cap off each study together with a hands-on practice session. I'll roll the track and we'll trade back and forth as I guide you through the core examples followed by several variations and embellishments. Working regularly with the "practice sessions" is really going to help you get these string bends down.

All of the performances are transcribed and you'll be able to sync the tab and notation to the video using TrueFire's learning tools. You can also loop or slow down the videos so you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are included to work with on your own.

Ready to get started? Grab your guitar, and let's do it!
Shake the Root
To start things off, we'll look at a lick that I first heard when I was 13 years old and have been trying to get it right since. I first heard Otis Rush do it, it's one that you can learn easily but it'll take a lifetime to master.

Shake the Root
Here in the practice session, I'll take a turn playing through the lick, and then it's your turn! We'll work through the original lick, then check out a few variations together.
Super Wide Bends
Alright ladies and gentlemen, now I'm going to show you what I call the Buddy Guy "super wide" bends. These kind of bends are what I love about his playing - he was able to get so much expression out of a single note! Let's look at a lick where we're bending as far as we can go, getting some sour, almost "microtonal" sounds that I love.

Get that authentic sound

It's hard to overstate how much better my blues sound has gotten since working through Kid Andersen's course. He teaches how to play those specific blues sounds that are embedded deep in your subconscious from years of listening to old blues but never figured out how to extract from the fingerboard. I learned so much and had a great time! These practice sessions really feel like sitting down with the teacher and working on new licks together. Highly recommended!

A Fun Way To Improve Your Blues Bending!

Kid Andersen is a great player who brings good humour to all his endeavours - including this set of lessons on blues bending. The practice sessions format (focusing on repeating very specific skills) really does deliver results if you stick with it, and is fun to work with.

Kid is the man!

A course based solely on bends seems a bit extravagant but there is so much to get in to on this course. Kid is an outstanding player- deeply rooted in the tradition of blues guitar playing but with more than a nod to modern techniques and styles. I really enjoy Kids lessons - this is the second one that I have bought and it doesn't disappoint. His humour shines through and makes watching the lessons a real pleasure. I think most guitarists like myself should spend more time on techniques like bends and vibrato- this for me is what really sets the electric guitar apart from so many instruments and what gives the guitar its expressiveness.

A bends with soul

Kid is a great guitarist who offers you a perspective of how bendings should be in the blues, a genre very characteristic for the soul and feeling that can never be missing. In the lesson he does a great job of showing you resources and techniques that are used in the creation of guitar licks, plus the explanation of each technique makes the learning dynamic. The style that he has and that you can learn makes the lesson totally recommendable.

So you think you know how to bend....

I thought that I knew how to bend. There's nothing to it, right? Just make sure you hit the target note and you are golden. Then you see Kid Andersen bend, and wow. You get wide bends (3 tones!), bends where you deliberately catch the string above (or is it below?). This course will makes your fingers hurt like they haven't for years. And to top it all off, Kid is a really amusing instructor with a very entertaining style. He makes it fun and boy can he play.
