About this course

Born in Norway, where he studied blues guitar with Morten Omlid, Kid Anderson moved to the states in 2001 to play with Terry Hanck’s band, and later with Charlie Musselwhite’s band (received the Blues Music Award for best contemporary blues album) and he also toured extensively with Elvin Bishop on the Red Dog Speaks Tour. Andersen was nominated for a Blues Music Award in the 'Gibson Guitar' category and in 2014, 2015, and 2016 he was nominated for a Blues Music Award in the 'Best Instrumentalist – Guitar' category.

We’re thrilled to welcome Kid to the family with his first TrueFire course and masterclass, Blues Refinery. You will likewise be thrilled when you start applying any of the dozens of “refined” technical and creative blues moves that Kid shares in this masterclass course.

”I’ve always loved playing the blues and have particularly been drawn to the artists who play with musical intent and refine their lines and solos using approaches outside the typical blues box and pentatonic scale. All of those greats influenced my own sound and approach which I’m excited to share with you here in Blues Refinery.”

In the first section of the course, Kid shows you many of his approaches for navigating the fingerboard, generating soloing ideas out of the typical blues box, and soloing with intent rather than just ‘noodling lines.’ You’ll also work on ‘refined’ techniques for bends vibrato, rakes, and muting.

”In the first part of the course, I'm going to talk about some of my most used concepts for working out of different chord shapes instead of the same old blues box. Navigating around the neck that way, and coming up with new ideas. We'll talk about how to play with intent and conviction - really making a musical statement instead of just noodling around, looking for the note. Of course, we'll be covering some of the blues basics along the way, stuff like bends, vibrato and how to make your note choices impactful by using rakes and muting.”

In the second section, Kid presents what he refers to as “shortcuts to sophistication” -- six very effective, and very accessible ways to refine your blues lines and solos.

”My "shortcuts to sophistication” are some of my favorite licks and tricks that I picked up over the years by listening - which is how you learn - on how a blues player can sound like you have a chordal and harmonic knowledge that you might not necessarily have. Basically, this is a way to fake like you're playing jazz while playing the blues!”

You’ll put all of Kid’s refined moves, shortcuts, approaches, and techniques to work in the final section where you’ll play through 5 full length soloing performance studies. Kid will first perform the so0lo and then break it down emphasizing all of the key elements in detail.

”Alright, it's time for the fun part! I get to play. I'm going to play over five different tunes, applying a lot of the concepts that I've been talking about. After I play them, we'll break it down with tablature to guide you through what I played. And I'll tell you why and how I played it so you can do it too!”

Kid will explain and demonstrate all of the key concepts and approaches along the way. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for each of the performances. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tool to sync the tab to the video.

Kid also includes all of the backing tracks for you to work with on your own. In addition, you’ll be able to loop or slow down any of the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and let’s refine our blues solos with Kid Anderson!

Blues Refinery
Hi, I'm Kid Anderson - Welcome to Blues Refinery!

I've always loved playing the blues and have particularly been drawn to the artists who play with musical intent and refine their lines and solos using approaches outside the typical blues box and pentatonic scale.

All of those greats influenced my own sound and approach which I'm excited to share with you here in this course.

In the first section of the course, I'll show you many of my approaches for navigating the fingerboard, generating soloing ideas out of the typical blues box, and soloing with intent rather than just noodling lines.

We'll also work on techniques like bends vibrato, rakes, and muting.

In the next section, I'll show you what I refer to as "shortcuts to sophistication" - these are six very effective, and very easy ways to refine your blues lines and solos. We'll put all of these shortcuts, approaches, and techniques to work in the final section where I'll perform 5 full length soloing performance studies.

After the performances, I'll break them down in detail. Everything is tabbed and notated, plus you'll get all of the backing tracks to work with on your own. You can loop and slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace.

Grab your guitar and let's get started!
SECTION 1: Essential Concepts
In this first part of the course, I'm going to talk about some of my most used concepts for working out of different chord shapes instead of the same old blues box. Navigating around the neck that way, and coming up with new ideas.

We'll talk about how to play with intent and conviction - really making a musical statement instead of just noodling around, looking for the note.

Of course, we'll be covering some of the blues basics along the way, stuff like bends, vibrato and how to make your note choices impactful by using rakes and muting. Let's dig in!
Finding Lines in Chord Shapes
So, now I want to talk to you a little bit about how we can orient ourselves around the neck by playing in different chord shapes instead of staying in the minor pentatonic blues box.
Finding Lines in Chord Shapes
So, now I want to talk to you a little bit about how we can orient ourselves around the neck by playing in different chord shapes instead of staying in the minor pentatonic blues box.
The Bend Collection
Bending strings - now, this is probably one of the most important things about playing guitar, and especially electric blues guitar. It's one of the great things about the instrument: the strings are thinner, and you can really pull the hell out of them and do more than you can with almost any other instrument.

Here I'll show you some of my "go-to" bends, and some of the details and intricacies about them.
The Vibrato Collection
Vibrato: probably one of the most important tools that you'll have in your skillset as a blues guitar player, and one of the most effective ways of being expressive with your playing. There's many different kinds; everyone kind of has their own type of vibrato. Here we'll touch on a few types that I like to use myself.
Raking & Muting
Now I'd like to talk about string rakes and muting, and how they go together. I use string rakes a lot to add extra impact to a note.

Kid is the best

I'm a big fan of Kid Andersen. I watched his old YouTube vids and was shocked at how authentic his blues sound and tone was. He had that touch - which only comes from years of passion and practice. So I was so happy to see he was sharing some of his hard won blues secrets in lesson form on TrueFire. If you're trying to improve your blues sound and feel, Kid Andersen is your guy. His humor and generosity in sharing his blues tricks and techniques makes this such a fun and rewarding course. Highly recommended!

Sophisticated blues

A fantastic lesson, Kid Andersen is a true master of the Blues. The material you can see in the lesson is a clear sample of the talent that this great guitarist has, you can learn a number of variations that will undoubtedly increase your level and your repertoire, through a style that sounds fresh and at the same time maintains the classic essence of the blues. It contains an explanation that is clear and understandable, but requires constant practice to master. A highly recommended lesson as you can get great results.

Da Bomb!

I've been through quite a few lessons on Truefire, and this one is my favorite so far. I play blues. The Kid knows blues and passes on stuff in a way .that is learnable. He puts the cookies on the bottom shelf and yea man, I ate them up. Some of the other Truefire blues videos, I learn more watching them on youtube than their Truefire videos. Not so with the Kid. You need a little style added to your blues licks? This video gets you started. Will be looking for more videos from da Kid!
